But the lack of brand loyalty arises out of major problem that the automobile market has been struggling with for years. The brands and models are all basically the same once you put them into a category (such as big trucks or economy cars). The advertising would be identical if not for the logos airing at the end. You could replace an Opal logo with a Kia one and nothing would change. You wouldn’t see the difference.

Make friends with your sales managers. These are the people that are ultimately going to help you seal the deal and they can also offer you “house deals,” which are about a third of the deals that take place at a dealership. If you’re friendly with your manager and they trust you, they’ll be able to put you on deals that are generated from the internet or from people at the dealership who know people who want to buy cars.[9]

As more in-vehicle audio and entertainment options become available to consumers, the question of satellite radio’s relevance has become more prominent. Most vehicle sold today have satellite radio at least as an option, if not standard, and most new car buyers are given a trial subscription, usually anywhere from to six months. This gives […]

One of the most interesting findings of this year’s survey of auto market trends was that dealerships that simply check and document marketing ROI are four times more likely to see an increase in ROI year over year. Four times!

The curriculum of Associate’s and Bachelor’s degree programs in automotive management typically includes advertising, sales and marketing, parts and service, finance, budgeting, warranties, and customer relations. Some technical and community colleges offer certificate programs and courses in automotive sales. In addition, the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) administers various dealership operations programs and automobile manufacturers consistently offer brand- and model- specific training.

As a young unemployed man who is about to graduate from college, the first thing I want is a brand spanking new hot hatch or some other type of fancy sports car that is way out of my price range. How often did you have to deal with customers such as myself, and did they usually leave with what they wanted? How often did they have to return their cars for something more economical? What usually ended up being the backbreaker?

The worst damage I ever saw to an Evo was from a cop who dropped 40k on the car, then another 10k on upgrades, only to blow the engine apart (literally) because he put 30lbs of boost into it from some shady racing shop. He actually had the balls to try and warranty it. Fortunately, he wasn’t a dick and didn’t flash his badge around, so we worked with him and got him a replacement engine at cost. He’d been through enough.

So what do you do? You’ve been in the car business long enough to know that buyers are online-based. Getting them into the dealership starts with smart marketing, focused targeting, and quality incentives. You’re in a time crunch, so it’s a good idea to follow a step-by-step process and focus on the areas that matter.

The right attitude for car sales is much more important in getting a job than formal education, according to an April 2013 “AOL Autos” article. Auto sales has evolved over time and employers want representatives that help them attract and retain customers. First, you need to commit to work 45 to 60 hours over six days at most dealerships. A positive attitude, honesty, strong communication skills and relationship-building abilities all contribute to the right car sales attitude. You also need to recognize the value of service to retain customers.

For example, if your customer says they can pay $200 a month, tell your manager $150 a month. This will give you more credibility with your customer and at the end of the day the important thing is that you’ve made a sale and have a pleased customer that may refer you to friends or will give you a high rating on your C.S.I (customer satisfaction index).[4]

I am a 20 year old considering getting a start in selling cars, what can I do to best prepare myself to get employed at a dealership, and which type of dealership would be most likely to hire someone like me?

Many CIOs are enjoying this kind of moment now, as companies everywhere face the business equivalent of a final exam for a vital class they have managed to mostly avoid so far: digital transformation.

I don’t think that people are fair to car salesman. Not everyone is out to rip you off. We are also god fearing people that have families to care for. Everyone deserves to make a profit if you provide a service.

Turn your focus to the surrounding car dealers in your area. What are they doing, both online and offline, that you’re not? What’s working for them and how can you do it better? Take time to research their entire marketing scheme, and how it all works together (or how it’s not working):

Selling Vehicles with Online Auctions: Selling vehicles online provides you with more potential customers than almost any other source. And online auction sites such as eBay are no exception. Most vehicles you place on an auction will generate potential buyers from across the country. And the best part is that most vehicles are sold in 7 days or less! We will show you the format to use, which options to select (and avoid,) as well as how to add video to your listing, to ensure a bidding frenzy for your auctions.

“IBISWorld grants access to abundant information on industries which we have credit exposure in allowing for a quick and easy source for trends, key issues, risks, opportunities, competitive environment and overviews, all of which is updated frequently and presented in consistent formats.”

I went through national auto academy too, zeroway! My class was fun. I do have to say that after being on the floor for six months or so, what they teach you is spot on. I sold my first car on my third day! And as far as fees go for the other poster, you’re not paying for a job; you’re paying for an education to get the job. Trust me, you won’t survive one Saturday on the floor without training.

You need to go into the dealership dressed in a nice coat/tie, and ask for the general sales manager. Let him know you are very interested in joining his/her’s sales staff, and ask for an interview. Be as professional as possible. Having an “interest in cars” means nothing, having an interest in making a good living and serving your customers means everything.

Dress professionally. Customers will size you up within a few minutes of meeting you at the dealership. Make sure you present your best self by dressing professionally every day for work. Put on a clean collared shirt, dress pants, a blazer or suit jacket, and formal shoes. Be well groomed and well put together so customers see you are trustworthy and professional.

3. Know your questions. Before you go on a sales appointment, create a list of questions to ask the prospect. This is the time for you to really get to know them, their needs, their business practices. It is not the time for you to talk endlessly about your product or service. If they look like a qualified prospect, provide them with a quote. If they don’t, walk away.

Placing ads in magazines and on websites such as AutoTrader, Cars.com or CarsDirect will greatly increase your potential customer base. People are often willing to travel for the right car, so using services such as these will help you reach customers local marketing would miss. You’ll typically have to pay to place ads, but could wind up selling a car a lot faster than you otherwise would, allowing you to reinvest your money. You can also place your cars on auction sites.

On the other hand, let’s say that an experienced Nissan salesman makes a salary of $21,600 per year, and off of every new car he sells, he makes $400. On average, monthly, he sells at least 10 new cars, and 10 used cars. His average commission on a used car, we’ll say, is $600 (generally there is more money to be made on used car sales due to being bought wholesale or gotten on the cheap as a trade-in).

While the minimum educational requirement for a car salesperson is a GED or a high school diploma, an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in business or communications can be beneficial. Training programs in automobile repair are available and can be useful as well. Management and senior positions may require education beyond high school, making the bachelor’s or associate’s degree desirable. A student interested in becoming a car salesperson should take courses in automotive technology, sales, business, computers, communication and mathematics.

Now when we look closer to home, at the Australian industry – The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) of Australia released it’s ‘Online Advertising Expenditure Report‘ highlighting that the automotive industry has an 18.5% share of online advertising to be spending much more than the second-placed finance category with a 11.6% share. It’s a positive sign for the industry but unfortunately the digital advertising spend by dealers represents just 0.4%. That’s one mighty difference in digital advertising spend between the manufacturers and dealers.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, sales of Skoda Octavia are rising fast (21%) in Europe and, despite the furor over gas-guzzling trucks in the US, the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford Explorer have increased sales.

The question will be how much MasterCard charges for that financing and whether Basware will link to any other financing providers, whether banks or perhaps nontraditional players like hedge funds or pension funds.

Based on our experiences and analyses, we estimate that about 7 percent of the total cost to serve consumers, or nearly one-quarter of automotive marketing and distribution costs, can be reduced based on a typical traditional dealer operation. (See Exhibit IV.) The cost reductions derive from three sources:

People don’t want to be pandered to anymore. They want to be spoken to like an investor — because frankly, that’s exactly what buying a car is: an investment! This is especially important in the digital age, as many consumers do their research online. If they’ve never set foot in your store, but discovered you on social media or search engine, you want your online presence to be a reflection of your amazing inventory and customer service.

Our company is comprised of many parts, working together, to form marketing strategies unique to every client. By integrating each part, we create consistency and heighten message and brand awareness. We target and re-target to keep our clients in front of their customers and prospects so that traffic converts to leads. And the proof is in the results!

On film and TV shoots, there are rarely leftovers. In fact, good food stylists often compete with the caterers: Actors usually have to eat the food during their scenes, and the crew finishes off the scraps. While shooting a Chinese New Year scene for the show Fresh Off the Boat recently, actress Lucille Soong told Oliver, who was styling that episode, that she was going to skip lunch because she wanted to enjoy eating her food on camera. “That was pretty freaking flattering!” Oliver says.

Hey guys for anyone looking to get in the car business I would highly recommend it. You definitely can not be lazy and you need to know how to be productive during the slow days/hours. I got into the business right when I turned 18 and now I am 20 selling 20 cars a month making around 10k a month. But you have to answer the phones, have great follow up and not afraid to take ups. I am just honest with customers and if they are looking at a car that I know doesn’t suit them I advise them to switch cars even if the gross is smaller on the other vehicle. Also, always ask for reviews on google mentioning your name. I am by all means no vet and learn something everyday. But personally love the business!

When it comes down to becoming a car salesman the actual requirements are much less than you can imagine. In most cases all that’s needed is a High School Diploma and a car sales interview to sell cars for a living. The needed car sales training that is required is usually done by the dealership where you were hired. Most of your car sales training will be done on the job, but the formal training will provide you with the theory. It will take some time to learn the methods and techniques so it may take 4 or 5 months before you start earning at a pace equal to 100K a year. Some dealerships like to hire experienced sales people, but that is rare. For most car dealers the most desired sales person is one that does not have car sales experience.

Food stylists who work on multiple projects at a time, like Oliver, can’t always stick around to see how their food will be used. They may later find out that a gorgeous spread was relegated to the background, or worse. For a scene in Seinfeld, Oliver was once asked to prepare a perfect, glistening turkey. “Later I was home watching the episode and they had put the turkey on Kramer!” she says. “I was literally crying I was laughing so hard. Never in a million years did I think my turkey was going to end up with a guy’s head.”

Another crucial element in delivering an optimal website experience is your website’s speed. With the emergence of smartphones and the ability to browse from anywhere, users have become incredibly impatient when browsing online.

Alex was born into the car business. His family owns a group of stores in Virginia where he held a multitude of positions since he first cut the grass there in 1989. DealerRefresh caught his attention in 2006 and he has been a part of the community ever since. In 2010 Alex joined Dealer.com to help put a dealer’s spin on products; where he got a front row seat to converse with over 13,000 dealers and watch 2 acquisitions totaling over $5 Billion. Today, Alex lives in Vermont and works to make DealerRefresh amazing!

The Role of Integrated Mobile Apps. Integrated mobile apps and connected vehicle services deliver more value for the customer, enhancing customer loyalty after the initial car purchase. A study by DMEautomotive showed that vehicle buyers using a branded app were 73% more likely to make a purchase from the dealership, and after making a purchase, booked 25% more service appointments than shoppers without an app. They also spent more money than non-app users when purchasing a vehicle, 7% more according to a study commissioned by Cars.com.

Now is the time to talk about your dealership in more of a personal way and use multiple media formats to engage with consumers. When building or reconstructing your website and social channels, you might consider adding in an “About Us” or “Our History” page.

Have a seminar once per month that discusses how car owners can fix common service issues with their vehicles on their own to draw people to your lot. Make the seminar be free and give folks a good discount on a vehicle if they decide to purchase one that day.

Search Engine Marketing is one of the most valuable advertising options available. Where SEO can take a lot of work and not be guaranteed, SEM and specifically Google Adwords can guarantee you a position within the search results, it’s just going to cost you. But with the right strategy you can minimise the cost you pay per click and provide a better return on your advertisement. A real benefit of search engine advertising is that you can manage your budget daily, access reports to evaluate its success and produce real-time advertising.

While visions of ‘The Homer’  must have crossed Citroen’s mind, the results are actually great, and had the bonus effect of ramping the brand’s social engagement figures through the roof, with over 24,000 different versions of the final car submitted (and an extra 15,000 fans joining up for the ride).

We also decided to take a look at how dealerships use marketing automation. Marketing automation tracks what a website visitor is looking at and engaging with online. Marketing is then automatically personalized for that person.

Whether targeting your customers online with email campaigns or direct mail pieces, DealerSocket allows you to reach your shoppers, analyze their behavior, and follow up in an effective and timely manner.

While digesting the post, the reader is being primed to want even more and will likely hand over their email address in return for it. Now you have a potential car buyer ready to be nurtured throughout their journey.

Major dealerships will want to promote their business with the one item that their customers value the most – their vehicles. Simply place a new model out in front of the store and put a “for sale” banner in the windshield. This is a great way to get people in the door and has helped thousands of sales be made this month alone. The more exotic or rare the vehicle is, the more marketing potential that it has.

Here’s an interesting question: Which dealerships are most profitable today? Answer: The ones with the most units in operation (market share). Correct? The way we see it, your share of the pie is either growing or shrinking. Please call us today and let The Automotive Marketing Group show you how we can help you grow your market share and build a recession-proof store.

Organic click-through rates are important. Highly relevant landing pages with content that solves the user’s problems are literally what Google recommends and what they want to see when crawling your website. Your content must match the user’s intent!

You can also bring in previous customers to give their feedback on different vehicles, for instance, or identify influencers in the industry and collaborate with them to produce or promote your content.

If you want to separate yourself from competition, transform your dealership into a brand and unify your services. What’s the brand message, and how can it inform your marketing? Branding can be a powerful way to communicate with customers. It keeps your dealership on the top of their minds.

In its most recent forecast of auto ad spending in late 2014, Borrell Associates predicted that dealers would spend more than $2.1 billion on newspaper advertising in 2015. That amount was down precipitously from just a few years earlier, when busy full-page dealer ads crowded Saturday newspapers to capture shoppers on their day off. As recently as 2013, dealers spent $3.1 billion advertising in newspapers.

Amid this tightening of demand, local automakers have seen more successful growth in recent years: SAIC motor sold 4.9m cars in 2016, clinching the title as China’s largest carmaker by sales that year, followed by FAW Group (3.1m car sales) and Dongfeng Motor (3m car sales), although these numbers generally also include sales from their JV partnerships. Great Wall Motors, China’s largest local manufacturer of SUVs and pickup trucks and headquartered in Hebei province, also sold 1.1m vehicles in 2016.

Capgemini also released a report indicating a strong correlation between customer satisfaction and loyalty particularly for dealers. Only 10% of customers, not satisfied at all, say they would likely or very likely buy their next car from the same dealer. 87% of highly satisfied customers would purchase the same brand again and 85% would buy from the same dealer.

I bought a new car 6 months ago. now I’m getting a lot of flyers from the dealership to trade it in. is there a benefit for me to do that? I’ve read that dealers will make more money on the used car so they’ll give me incentives to trade my almost brand new car for an actual new car. I’m tempted because there’s a new model of the same car I have that just came out with a bigger engine, which I like more.

“Above all other conferences, the OMMA events provide the most comprehensive insight into the state and future of interactive media, marketing and advertising.  The content is top-notch, and the individuals I have the opportunity to meet, are the ones leading the charge to make interactive a premier medium for advertisers.  These are top-quality events for anyone involved in the digital media space”

According to McKinsey&Company’s ‘Innovating Automotive Retail ‘ report, more than one-third of customers would consider buying a car online. Now, are you sure whether you’re encouraging this trend for your own customers?

Show me you’re serious: The salesperson asks, “Can I get your driver’s license or social security card to show my boss that you’re serious?” Meanwhile they now know your grandmother died of heart disease, you have a huge house and money in the bank. Don’t give them any advantages of being able to check you out while you are not looking.

Now that movies and TV shows are frequently filmed all over the world, instead of just on sets in Los Angeles, food stylists can be based anywhere. There is a concentration of stylists who live in Vancouver, British Columbia, for example, because that’s where many shows are now filmed. Labor laws also often require production crews to hire locally, so residing outside of L.A. can be a real advantage.

I don’t think that people are fair to car salesman. Not everyone is out to rip you off. We are also god fearing people that have families to care for. Everyone deserves to make a profit if you provide a service.

Can you give me an idea of what sort of margin we can expect to be taken off of a Mercedes vs. a Mitsubishi? We bought a 2009 C350 for 40k even (listed at 41500) with the “package 2” option a number of years ago. Anywho, we’ve since gotten rid of it, but want another one some day. Is there more room on Mercedes to negotiate vs a brand like Mitsubishi or is that just me assuming there is.

Be authentic. Don’t just put on a happy face to make a sale. Actually care about your customers’ needs and sympathize with them. Customers will likely be able to tell if you dislike the part of your job that involves interacting with customers, or if you’re trying to speed them through “meet and greet” so you can start showing them cars. Be patient and don’t force any decision your customer.

But after calculating how much it would take to buy similar vehicles at auction –including auction expenses, vehicle transportation costs, and travel and hotel costs for the used-car manager — it makes more sense to put more in the trade, at least for vehicles that fit the dealership’s needs, he said.

KBB.com has them listed private party with 128k for around $12,000. Again, I’m going to advise against it. The repairs cost on an import like that is going to exceed the value within the first two years. Please consider as an alternative, a Saturn Sky Redline (turbo 4 cabriolet) or a Pontiac Solstice. Also, the Mazda Miata is a fantastic car, and has a HUGE aftermarket, while being incredibly reliable, and very inexpensive.

Make sure that you have sufficient contact information. Some dealers make it so hard to contact them, it doesn’t give us the best impression of your customer service offering. When we see just a contact form we feel like we’ll never be answered.

35. If you’ve been watching a particular used car online, call the dealership to be sure the car is still in stock before you pay a visit. Online inventory changes don’t happen in real time, so it can take hours — or even days — for online inventory to be updated.

I am a new business and don’t have a sales person. I know my market. I have made 2 calls to them and they say they should know soon. I am afraid. I have everything I need but guts. I don’t have money for a salesman. Only commision right now but no takers to even ask what my business is. They want money and I don’t have it. Even if I got the leads. Any suggestions

The hands off approach — walk up to a potential customer, shake hands firmly and offer a quick greeting. Then, hand them your business card and say “Hi my name is X, here are my contact details. My desk is over there, so take a look around and when you’ve found something you like or have questions come over and I can assist you. Also, if another salesperson approaches you, inform them I am assisting you.” (The problem with this approach is your customer won’t likely feel any attachment to you, and so they may move on to someone else or leave the dealership with no information gained.)

Ever wonder how you rank with a brand’s “official superfan” on Facebook?  Yeah me neither.  Regardless, BMW brings its fans the opportunity, through a Facebook data generated personal infographic, to see how superfan they are.

Success as a CIO these days requires more than delivering near-perfect uptime, says Lenovo’s Hu. You need to be able to understand the business as well. Some CIOs simply don’t have all the business skills that are needed to succeed in the transformation. Others lack the internal clout: a 2016 KPMG study found that only 34% of CIOs report directly to the CEO.

These days, no one has time to visit a car dealership, talk to a salesperson, then go for a test drive only to discover that the car isn’t right for them. That’s why consumers will conduct in depth research online first to find out if the model they have their eye on is the perfect fit. Optimizing your mobile site so users can easily find the information they’re looking for on the go will ensure success at this micro-moment.

1. If you’re in no rush to buy a car, the end of a model year is a great time to get a deal. Determining when this is for a particular car can be difficult, but if a dealer has two years of a new vehicle on its lot (say, 2014s and 2015s), chances are the older ones are going to be priced to move. The last week of the year is another good time to buy. You’ll find lots of specials and manufacturer incentives at both times of year.

Hello , I started for a dealership about a month ago . I believe I will succeed at this and become good at it . One problem is I’m having is some of the customers I can’t get in the building ? As its a requirement here. If I feel they will walk I’m to get a manager . By the time I get a manager an go through the hassle of them if they come out the customer may have left or has little interest at this point. At that point I’m being reminded I will be fired f customers walk off the lot without talking to a manager ? Suggestions ?

“The first way to not fall prey to others manipulating your emotions is to understand the process and what the other person’s going to do,” says Miller. “If you can anticipate it, it has no impact.” For example, a common tactic in negotiating is using the “good cop, bad cop” routine. One party will entice the other with a promising deal and then bring in someone else to play hardball. “You think you have a deal. You become emotionally attached to that deal. And then he takes himself out of the picture and brings in someone brand new that has no emotional attachment.”

Lexus is overpriced Toyotas. I would buy the Toyota. Same with Nissan / Infiniti. There is no substitute for Jag / BMW. Seriously. They’re the best in the industry. Even though I hate Mercedes, the E Class, CLS, S Class, and SL are absolutely gorgeous. Cadillac is not GM. I don’t know how they do it, but with roughly the same materials and build processes, they turn out a drastically superior product. I highly recommend them. Lotus is sex in automotive form. Tesla is the future of automobiles, and if you can get a Model S, sell your kidney. Audis vary from good (A series) to great (S series) to oh my god just hold me while I lay in the wet spot (R series). Acuras are angular Hondas and don’t belong in the conversation.

Some argue that this is creepy. It is unless you treat it correctly. Your salesperson does not say: “I saw you looking at this website, do you want to buy a car?” Instead, they need to think about providing a resource. It’s appropriate to say: “We’re reaching out to customers showing interest and we wanted to see if we could help.” Another way to say it: “We’re reaching out to VIP customers and want to see if there are any resources we can provide.”

That means you talk to 100 people, about 12-15 are going to buy. Rookies should expect an 8-10% for a few months. This includes walk-ins, phone-ops, internet leads etc. When you get good you can expect about 15-18% closing ratio. If you keep this in mind, you can have a better reality of the world you are in. So just talk to as many people as you can and follow up with them until they tell you to screw off or they die. Seriously. I called and emailed this one guy everyday for 3 months before he finally answered me back. He’s just that busy of a guy. You never know. He ended up being one of my biggest deals this year.

While visions of ‘The Homer’  must have crossed Citroen’s mind, the results are actually great, and had the bonus effect of ramping the brand’s social engagement figures through the roof, with over 24,000 different versions of the final car submitted (and an extra 15,000 fans joining up for the ride).

You will be put together, tested and tried on by customers and sales managers that will at times have you wanting to knock them out, cuss them out, throw them out or walk out yourself. Your ability to control yourself can make a huge difference in you car salesman commission and car salesman income. If you are currently a car salesman you know exactly what I am talking about because you have already had your on the job car salesman education. One of the sayings that I try to remember is: “Don’t get mad, get even by selling them a car”. Then I put on my game face and do my best to sell them a car and make a nice big front end gross. It doesn’t always work, but it does more times than it doesn’t. Sometimes being a car salesman means we just have to suck it up to sell a car.

While shopping for a car, I was amazed by the knack car salesmen have for setting the tone of the conversation. As I lobbied for a lower price, better financing, or even free floor mats, I was met not just by a counter-offer, but an emotional response as well. He would appear upset by my seemingly perturbed by my “unfair” demands. Had I offended him? Did I cross an invisible line? Well, in this case, it’s more likely that he was exaggerating, hoping I’d retreat. “People tend to like human interactions to be pleasant,” says Pham, “so negotiators will inflate their emotions hoping the other party will seek closure.”

But did you know that taking things away from your prospects can actually be used as a closing technique? As with all closing techniques, the take away close takes a discipline professional to know how and when to use it correctly. If used too often or too early, you’ll end up negatively affecting your margin. Like every other sale, the Take Away Close is not the “end all, be all” close. Learn it and, more importantly, learn when to use it.

As a result, in some companies, the most interesting tech developments are happening despite IT, not because of it. “There’s an alarming digital divide within many companies. Marketers are developing nimble software to give customers an engaging, personalized experience, while IT departments remain focused on the legacy infrastructure. The front and back ends aren’t working together, resulting in appealing web sites and apps that don’t quite deliver,” writes George Colony, founder, chairman, and CEO of Forrester Research, in the MIT Sloan Management Review.

3. The cost of distributing and marketing automobiles will be cut significantly. New formats and channels will discipline the current system to drive out non-value-adding cost. Dealer consolidations may unlock substantial economies of scale in back-office functions and purchasing leverage. Much larger savings are possible, however, by driving out inventory; reducing investment in brick-and-mortar and real estate investments, and optimizing the delivery of services.

Retail car sales can be a great and rewarding career choice, but it’s not for everyone. If you’re thinking about becoming a car salesman, take a look at a what a car salesman’s day looks like to see if you have what it takes.

Just remember that it is a numbers game. the salesman who talks to the most people usually ends up selling the most. Talk to your friends, family, cashier at mcdonalds, bank teller, everyone. You are a salesman 24/7. Not just 9am-6pm at your dealer. Everyone should have your business card.

Refrain from “yes” or ” no” or broad questions if you don’t want your customer to easily walk away. By asking “Can I help you today?” or “How can I help you today?” a customer can easily respond with “I’m just looking, thanks” and then you’ve likely lost your chance at selling a car.[1]

In the first week I discovered a tire was slowly leaking and wanted it relplaced. They replaced the tire with one that didn’t match the others, and I requested a matching tire. I had them fix the AC. (I bought it on a cold day, and discovered a few days later on a hot day that it didn’t work) The “pop the trunk” button didn’t work and I called them on it. I had them seal a wind shield crack that I didn’t notice until the sun shone at a certain angle. I think I’m forgetting something else too. It must have been 5 or so visits in the first couple weeks.

(4) Create a new multi-channel model: Tesla decided not to build a traditional car dealer network. Nobody likes car dealers: even buying and servicing a high-end car like a Porsche is a dreadful experience. Tesla looked at the car buying process and optimized its sales model to fit the way people buy cars today. Since people start online, Tesla designed their process around online information, commerce, and community. Their site is unusually clear, clean, and effective. For people who want to see the car, they are building kiosk stores in malls with Tesla experts who can’t sell cars and who aren’t commissioned. When a buyer is ready, they place a refundable deposit online. If they want to drive a car, they can arrange a test drive after they’ve placed a deposit. Essentially, Tesla is selling cars the same way Apple sells the iPhone.

50. If you are still paying off your trade-in, complete your deal before the next payment’s due date, especially if you’re leasing, since those payments are typically for the month to come. There’s no reason to pay for a car that you won’t be using.

At the same time, radio has actually increased as a dealer advertising medium since 2012, growing from $641 million to a forecasted $746 million, according to Borrell. And despite predictions of the demise of traditional TV in a bubbling world of Internet program viewing, video-streaming over mobile phones and the rise of on-demand formats such as Netflix, Hulu and YouTube, car dealers were on track to spend $1.3 billion on TV ads in 2015, according to Borrell.

Cost and customer-service improvements are necessary but not sufficient to transform auto retailing channels. Realizing the full potential of these programs is not possible without a reasonable view of the different customer segments that should be targeted; the appropriate mix and level of marketing and distribution functions needed for each segment, and the best portfolio of distribution formats and channels to reach the targets.

Let me tell you, that is a strange and sobering thought. And it changes your perspective completely. The following is a slight exaggeration: Imagine that one day civilization collapses, and all the grocery stores close, and you suddenly realize that if you want something to eat, you’re going to have to go out and hunt it down and kill it. Otherwise you’ll starve. That is what commissioned sales is like.

I have been selling cars for about 3 years here on the West coast, and truly love my profession. My best advice to a new-comer to this industry would simply be, be genuine and set yourself apart from the rest. You do this by taking a true interest in your customer and having true passion for your product and what you do. Passion is contagious. I remember when I first applied and went in to take my drug test for pre-hiring process. The lab tech asks you to empty your pockets, an I handed him my car keys. He saw the Nissan logo, and he said that after screening thousands of car salesmen for pre-employment I was the first he had ever seen that actually owned a car from the company I was applying for. In other words if you dont have to fake it , it comes a lot more naturally. I have owned nothing but Nissans all my life. So when I tell my customers that these are well built reliable vehicles, I am not just blowing smoke, I am sharing my passion for Nissan cars to everyone I talk to. I am excited about the company’s new offerings and different features and trim packages, so learning the product isnt like a homework assignment to me, it’s a hobby. To be truly successful in this business you have to set yourself apart. Car salesmen already have a negative stigma, so if you simply do the opposite of what most car salesmen do you already have an advantage. I am glad there are so many lazy, shortsighted, greedy car salesmen out there, because when i get a chance to sit down with people, it gives me an opportunity to make a great impression on them by being polite and professional and straightforward and defying and exceeding their expectations. You really are selling yourself. Most of my sales are from word of mouth referrals because I focus on delivering a truly enjoyable experience for the customer day in and day out, and they tell their friends and family “go buy a car from Luke, he’s not like the other guys.” I don’t spend a lot of time cold calling or trying to build my customer base through facebook. I do it face to face, and still very much enjoy talking to people who come into the lot. Even with all the fancy technology and research and internet sales today, most cars are still sold the way they always have been. Through personal interaction, face to face meetings and handshakes. It’s so easy to become formulaic and look at everyone as a number, but if you truly take an interest in people’s needs and don’t fake it, you will do well. People understand that you have to earn a living, and if they like you and and you show a genuine effort, they will want to reward you for your efforts and good personality and this will make the negotiation a breeze. If they like you enough, people will actually feel bad about getting too good of a deal because they care about your interests, that is, if you have a genuine concern for their interests. You never want to get “commission breath.” People can smell it when you are simply trying to make a sale and chase the dollar. This is human nature and most car salesmen will try to take the shortest path to the dollar. I cant tell you how many times I hear other sales guys on my team walk up to someone and within 2 minutes ask them “are you serious about buying today?” This is like walking up to an attractive woman at a bar and saying “Are you serious about going home with me tonight?” You have to enjoy the dance, enjoy the process of ‘courting’ your customer. Most guys just want the easy sale. What they dont realize is that they can actually sell more cars at a higher price if they truly go to bat for the customer and give them genuine effort. Lazy greedy car salesmen still make sales, because people need cars, but this makes people bitter and regretful, and they certainly wont be saying anything good about the salesman to their friends or family. If you set yourself apart and truly enjoy the process of helping someone and delivering for their needs instead of focusing on your commission and volume numbers, you will actually sell more in the longrun. You can fake it and still make money but if you dont have a true passion for helping others, you will burn out quicker and coming into work will be a chore instead of a treat. Dan Hyandai who commented below is exactly right. Always look at it from the customers perspective. You are helping someone to buy, not selling them, and theres a big difference. You want to be an expert in helping to make someones decision to buy a car smooth, easy and enjoyable. I call it ‘golden rule selling.’ Treat the customer how you would want to be treated if you were shopping for a car. It’s really not a difficult concept, but you would be surprised how few car salesmen still use this approach. Car sales arent for everyone. It’s long hours, and you will be spending a lot of your weekends at the dealerships, as Saturday is always the biggest day at any dealership in the country. But you can have balance in this job, and have some time off as long as you don’t mind answering your cell. Again this is where the passion comes in. If you love what you are selling, talking to someone about it on the phone isnt like work, it’s sharing what you love with others. If you are passionate about what you are selling and you focus on the customer first and your commission last, you will set yourself apart from the pack and you will be successful in this industry.

One interesting corollary of this trend toward broader teamwork is that talent is a priority among digital leaders: they spend more on training their employees and partners than ordinary companies, as well as on hiring the people they need, according to the SAP-Oxford Economics survey. They’re also already being rewarded for their faith in their teams: 71% of leaders say that their successful digital transformation has made it easier for them to attract and retain talent, and 64% say that their employees are now more engaged than they were before the transformation.

Some commercial food stylists, like Anderson, are flown in for shoots. “Food stylists can make or break a commercial,” she says. “And if you have trouble and you don’t know what you’re it can be a real problem for production.” This is especially true on out-of-the-country shoots, when stylists don’t have the resources that they’re used to. So clients who know her and her skill level, such as Taco Bell, will fly her to wherever they’re filming.

Many salespeople work purely on commission, meaning they only make money if they sell a car. “We’re not paid anything for standing there 12 hours a day and not selling,” says McDonald. “And if I work a whole week and don’t sell a car that week, I make nothing. When I do finally sell a car, I might make a minimum commission, which at my dealership is $125. The Meet and Greet might sound simple enough, but it is much more complex than you would believe. Within the first thirty seconds of meeting you, your customer will form an opinion of you in their minds.

As 2015 wraps up, we are already looking ahead to what the future holds for automotive marketing in 2016. We just hosted a webinar on the topic, which you can watch here, but we wanted to take the five key trends and share them today so you can get a head start on tomorrow.

7. Check your insurance rates on the car you’re looking to buy before you buy it. This is one that people often forget to do when car shopping, and it can really come back to bite them. Here’s an example:

The car dealer CANNOT charge you for using the vehicle you purchased from them. For instance, it cannot charge you for the miles put on the car during the 10-day period.  However, you are responsible for any physical damage to the car during the time it is in your possession.

If a food stylist needs one sprig of parsley for a shoot, they’ll often order 10 bunches. They never know what the condition of the parsley is going to be when it arrives from the produce vendor, or if the shoot is going to require more than they originally planned for. Carving a turkey in a scene? That may require two dozen birds if an actor keeps flubbing his line.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, most of this education comes through job training (www.bls.gov). After hiring a new car salesperson, the company begins their own on-the-job training process. A new trainee is paired with an experienced salesperson, and this training can last anywhere from a few days to months.

If there is only a single person, try and get to know as much as you can about them. Get them talking for once on a roll, a customer will lay out everything for you that you need to close a deal with them.

7. Car sales compensation plans are designed for hard-chargers. If you’re not willing to work 50-60 hours a week, not aggressive enough to ask for the sale, and not polished enough to make people feel comfortable, you’re not going to make much money.

18. Shut up and listen. You have two ears and one mouth so listen twice as much as you talk and learn when to shut up. See Shut-up a Car Salesman Tip the post. The power of knowing when to talk and when to shut up can make a huge difference in your car sales commission. There is a saying in the car business when negotiating that the first one to speak loses after a proposal.

You betcha, but every little thing helps… It will add to the perceived value of your personal brand, it will enhance the uniqueness of the customers experience with you and without a doubt make you different than any other car guy/gal.

Hello, I’ve been doing sales for about 2.5 months. I transitioned from the Internet Sales (BDC). The biggest thing I have issues with are objections from the customer. We utilize the closer system. Once I get a commitment I’m good. But those couple of times I encounter a tough customer who have objection after objection, I have difficulty. Any tips? Robert.westerman@yahoo.com

I also believe we’ll finally see more OEM’s will also introduce their versions of subscription-based buying programs. Cadillac launched their Book by Cadillac last year with minimal fanfare in three markets. Book by Cadillac provides access to several vehicles and multiple swaps (30!) allowed over an 18-month subscription term.

But as always, there is a limit to nerdy magic. No matter how helpful CIOs try to be, their classmates still won’t pass if they don’t learn the material. With IT increasingly central to every business—from the customer experience to the offering to the business model itself—we all need to start thinking like CIOs.

I’m the founder of DealerRefresh. I got my start in the dealer business when I was 18. From there I’ve worked throughout several departments within fixed to variable ops. Whether it’s managing the desk, perfecting sales process or studying online marketing and media trends, I absolutely love this business and the challenges it brings. On top of keeping up with DealerRefresh, I consult with dealerships and key industry businesses. My passion has been and continues to be helping dealers leverage new media to sell and improve customer service.

To quote Henry Ford’s words – “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses ”. Great leaders don’t just meet expectations of what their customers want, they understand the need and deliver much more than what the average customer can verbalize. It isn’t rocket science when you break it down and look at it objectively.

The research process for today’s car shopper lives on multiple channels. But when dealers implement the digital tools necessary to follow their consumers online, they can offer the information and deals that motivate shoppers to arrive on the lot, ready to purchase.

This lack of a strategic perspective is holding back digital transformation at many organizations. They approach digital transformation as a cool, one-off project: we’re going to put this new mobile app in place and we’re done. But that’s not a approach; it’s an island of innovation that doesn’t join up with the other islands of innovation. In the longer term, this kind of development creates more problems than it fixes.

When people make big ticket purchases, they’ll usually want to make sure that this is the absolute best product that will fulfill their needs. By offering customer testimonials, potential purchasers will be able to see what real people had to say about your dealership, and apply it to their purchasing decision. Displaying customer testimonials on your page is an easy way to promote your product in a way that users know is genuine.

I am a 19 years of age and have been offered a trial shift in a car dealership, I have been in sales for the last year and a half within telecommunications, selling phones. The obvious outlier is the fact that selling cars is completely different. I’d like to think I have a good sales technique and a natural thirst for it, however when it comes to car sales I’m a little jubious as I feel my young age might reflect in a different manner? To elaborate I mean simply that the older generation may feel they wouldn’t want to buy a car off me because I’m young. Anything you could suggest or advise me? However I am a strong believer in if you can sell in the correct way with formality and confidence, age should not be a factor. Please let me know what you think, email is as follows:

Local car dealerships often target consumers within a specific radius surrounding their location, assuming that their best customers are those that are nearby. Radial determination can be misleading, however, because the demographics of the consumers living in a particular location can vary greatly even in a small area. For example, young people in urban areas or low-income families are not likely to purchase a luxury car, although they may live within the radius a Lexus dealership.

Dress business casual for the interview. If you get called back for a formal interview, wear clothing that is business appropriate, such as formal pants, a blazer, and a collared shirt. You can also wear a tie for an added level of professionalism.[7]

Selling a used car can be a tough experience. You’ve got to be able to establish a level of trust with people who are already not going to trust almost anything you’ve got to say. How can you overcome these assumptions to be able to do good business? Through a strong marketing effort that helps you establish your own community reputation.

1) Each dealer will always have some “old salts” (experienced “lifers” in the car biz). Common sense might tell you to learn their ways, but my approach was to avoid them. Why? They’ve seen newbies come and go, and usually do not want to help them. They are there to take customers and put money in their till, not yours. You need to own your customers’ experience, not pass them off to someone else.

The fact is that the people with the best credit get the best deals. People with the worst credit often get screwed.  People with poor credit pay the highest prices, the most interest, and are often forced to finance for terms that are either too short or too long.  Worst of all, their choices are severely limited.  They can’t just walk into a dealership and pick out the car of their dreams; the dealership tells them which vehicle they can buy, take it or leave it.  On the other hand, people with the best credit pay the lowest prices, the least amount of interest (sometimes none at all), and can finance for terms that suit them.  Their choices are almost limitless.  They can buy whatever they want, and dealers will fight for their business.  While this isn’t exactly a negotiating technique, good credit is the fundamental foundation for effective negotiation, kind of like good physical conditioning is the foundation for good athletic performance.

This one by my friend Charles Cannon I love for a number of reasons. One reason is you can bet your butt no other car salesperson is handing over a book they wrote to a customer that helps them with their car buying experience.

As we discussed, social media is not about blatantly advertising how great you are but rather should be geared towards creating content to engage consumers. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t promote your sales and promotions. Everyone loves a deal and discounts so promote away. Be creative and reward your social followers with promotions and contests only available on your Facebook page or other social accounts.

13. Car buyers will pay more for a car than they need to when they believe that the value of your service and the value of the dealership outweighs the price. This is very important car selling advice and I’m not going to type it twice so read again and again until it sinks in and becomes a part of your being.

12. The car buyer wants to feel like they are getting a good or at least fair deal. Whether they made a great deal or not they need to feel like they made a good choice. Almost all buying decisions are made with emotion, so the way they feel about you, your dealership, the car, the price or the deal is critical to your success as a car salesman and overcoming objections.

A 1994 Dodge Neon that we took in trade for $2500. We owned it for $3000. It was worth $7000. I sold it for $6995, and made 25% commission, plus it was my #16 stair stepper (I sold 16 cars that month, new and used), so I got a $1000 bonus on it for being Salesman of the Month plus highest gross profit for the month. It was a good month.

No matter where you buy, you have to perform your due diligence. We’ve seen certified pre-owned luxury cars that have been previously wrecked or have other problems. A totaled car was sold as “certified” by a Mercedes-Benz dealer. The dealers like to advertise things like 175 point inspections but in reality these don’t mean much and they really don’t do much to recondition the cars other than normal detailing. Please do the proper background check on any used car and get an AutoCheck report.
