The first thing a car salesman asks when you walk onto the lot is, “Do you want to take a test drive?” That’s because once you fall in love with the heated seats and surround-sound audio system, he can play to your emotional attachment to the car instead of the facts and figures of the deal. “The worst thing you can do is become emotionally attached to a deal because then it feels very hard to walk away,” says Miller. “If you’re not willing to walk away from a deal, you really can’t negotiate effectively.”

Despite these restrictions, foreign JVs still regularly account for the top ten largest automobile manufacturers in the market; General Motors, through its 10 JVs in China, including with SAIC and Liuzhou Wuling Motors, sold 3.8m vehicles in the Chinese market in 2016; as mentioned earlier in this section, much of this has been due to successful localisation measures targeting low-income consumer segments. Volkswagen (Germany), with its local JVs with SAIC and First Automobile Works (FAW), sold 4m vehicles in the market over the same period, while Nissan (Japan), Ford (US) and BMW (Germany) saw vehicle sales of 3m, 1.3m and over 500,000 respectively, according to company reports.

Create a referral program that rewards existing customers for sending people your way. These are the people that are ultimately going to help you seal the deal and they can also offer you “house deals,” which are about a third of the deals that take place at a dealership. If you’re friendly with your manager and they trust you, they’ll be able to put you on deals that are generated from the internet or from people at the dealership who know people who want to buy cars.[9]

A car sale that results in the minimum commission is called a “mini” in the car business, and salespeople hate minis. For the most part, new vehicle sales are all minis. Unless you’re selling a hot model for sticker, you’re not likely to make more than $75 to $150 when you sell a new car.

Indeed thanks to digital monitoring and reporting tools, we are only now understanding precisely what the automotive buyer’s journey looks like in order to take advantage of it. One of the presenters at the Google Marketing Next presentation today, Bhanu Narasimhan the Director of Audience Products, explained how nowadays the path to buy a car doesn’t start and end with a person searching “cars for sale.” Rather potential car buyers will spend time online researching a few makes and models, reading vehicle reviews, as well as watching some test-drives on YouTube before ever stepping foot in a dealership. These types of searches signal that this person is in the market for a car and about to purchase.

Inquire about positions at your local auto dealer. Go into your local auto dealership and see if they have any openings for salespeople. I woke up this morning to a pitch on my twitter account.  Unlike most ‘hey can you post this on your blog,’ requests this one is pretty good.  There are some good examples of social media activations happening at the Auto Show including uses from Nissan, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz. There’s even a little dig at Citroen who allows for email sharing only on a build application they have on the floor.

Social media feeds will allow a dealership to increase their current reach greatly. Simply start an account on Facebook and Twitter and ensure that your profile links to your website. Once followers start flowing in and likes are abundant, continual updates will provide further marketing. Promote new vehicles, special sales and engage the community. If one of these fans or followers shares the content you post about a new vehicle, it may just lead to a sale.

The best thing you can do is track your marketing campaigns with as much data as possible.  Use surveys to find out if people found you through traditional media.  Online marketing has the advantage of being much easier to track, so you can gather data on your website and social media traffic to see what’s resulting in conversions.

The reason these are so important is because it helps change public perception about your dealership. Beyond that, you need to monitor your reviews across all these platforms.  It’s part of your digital marketing manager’s job.  Respond to any reviews you see fit, but especially the negative ones.  Explain your side and offer to rectify the situation.  Many buyers will change their review when they see you value their opinion.

This procedure is called product recall. Product recalls happen in every industry and can be production-related or stem from the raw material.

A mass of research data, compiled into one article by V12 Data, revealed a number of insights into why car sales are now so reliant on social media. It’s no secret that the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry make for good used cars. But they might cost a few thousand more than a comparable Ford Fusion or Kia Optima, even though these are good cars, too. So if you’re looking to save money, consider more than one brand. We suggest making a list of three cars that meet your needs and fall within your budget. Edmunds reviews have great information to guide your choices.

I don’t think that people are fair to car salesman. Not everyone is out to rip you off. We are also god fearing people that have families to care for. Everyone deserves to make a profit if you provide a service.

The pendulum is clearly swinging back to an in-store experience from getting everything done online. Dealers should focus on doing a great job in both areas, but concentrate on providing a world-class customer service experience that people will jump online and write about in a review. So many of you ask, “how or where do I get a customer base”? First guys and gals, call all your friends, sister, brother, momma, out of state, next door, coffee shop, EZMart, etc. Tell everyone including God that you sell the best cars , trucks , vans on the planet. Make a list of everyone you know and call them, email, or pop in on them. That will start the first week.

Important to consider is the relationship you have with the other party to determine whether their emotions are likely genuine or feigned, says Pham. “If you’re negotiating within a couple–negotiating the division of labor within the household–I think you should pay attention to those emotions and if the person is really offended by certain requests. Where you have to pay attention is whenever you’re dealing with people who can fake them. That’s the difference between dealing with a car dealer who does that for a living versus the normal negotiations that we do in everyday life.” Professional relationships are tricky because they fall somewhere in the middle. Even if you have a personal relationship with your boss, when it comes time to negotiate a salary increase, he may still feign the distress your demands are causing.

The dealer relationships, marketing expertise and leasing acumen Joy Falotico cultivated over nearly three decades with Ford’s financing arm stood out amid the void created by a top executive’s sudden departure.

*Niche brand dealerships (say Jaguar, Porsche, Land Rover, Ferrari, etc.) may or may not have a quota. It will depend on how many people they have, how big their market is, etc. They also often have lower commission rates and minimum monthly guarantees.

While the policy support has been strong, the results have been mixed; in 2015 China sold around 207,000 NEVs, well short of its 500,000 goal. While this number more than doubled to 507,000 in 2016, at this rate it seems unlikely that the country will meet its ambitious 7m annual sales target by 2025. However, the government is keen to step up pace. New regulations, issued on September 28th, require carmakers to gather credits for NEV sales that are equivalent to 10% of their sales volumes by 2019 and 12% by 2020. The rules apply to all carmakers that produce or import more than 30,000 vehicles a year for the Chinese market.

Based on our experiences and analyses, we estimate that about 7 percent of the total cost to serve consumers, or nearly one-quarter of automotive marketing and distribution costs, can be reduced based on a typical traditional dealer operation. (See Exhibit IV.) The cost reductions derive from three sources:

Those in sales should start at step 1 and do everything they professionally can to move all the way to the final step. But what if they started at the final step and asked for referrals? I’m the detail manager at a Toyota/Scion/Lexus dealer in the northwest, and let me go ahead and chime in here. The main point, is that the detailer is the LAST person to touch your car before you take delivery.

For example, if your customer says they can pay $200 a month, tell your manager $150 a month. This will give you more credibility with your customer and at the end of the day the important thing is that you’ve made a sale and have a pleased customer that may refer you to friends or will give you a high rating on your C.S.I (customer satisfaction index).[4]

You just started as the new GM of a pre-owned dealership with three locations. The owners understand that car sales, at the end of the day, is a face-to-face business. They’ve hand-picked their sales teams and provide regular training sessions throughout the year. But there’s one problem: they’re not getting enough traffic to the dealership.

First, total shareholder return (TSR): Over the last five years, the annual rates of return that the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average achieved for investors (including dividends) were 14.8 percent and 10.1 percent, respectively. In that period, average auto maker TSR was only 5.5 percent. Second, return on invested capital: In 2016, the top 10 OEMs returned an anemic 4 percent, about half of the industry’s cost of capital. The leading 100 suppliers have done a little better, just beating their costs of capital to enjoy a small positive return, after many years of negative net returns.

I have been selling cars for about 3 years here on the West coast, and truly love my profession. My best advice to a new-comer to this industry would simply be, be genuine and set yourself apart from the rest. You do this by taking a true interest in your customer and having true passion for your product and what you do. Passion is contagious. I remember when I first applied and went in to take my drug test for pre-hiring process. The lab tech asks you to empty your pockets, an I handed him my car keys. He saw the Nissan logo, and he said that after screening thousands of car salesmen for pre-employment I was the first he had ever seen that actually owned a car from the company I was applying for. In other words if you dont have to fake it , it comes a lot more naturally. I have owned nothing but Nissans all my life. So when I tell my customers that these are well built reliable vehicles, I am not just blowing smoke, I am sharing my passion for Nissan cars to everyone I talk to. First is the need for parallel formats and channels in a given region, each with its own pricing and bundle of service offerings. Parallel sales channels can range from the traditional dealer to the Internet or to direct sales.
