The median of all salespeople is something like 18k supposedly. For a car dealership, the percentage CG plus F&I can mean an average around 54k+. If you sell at a well run BMW or Audi dealership, the numbers can be in the 70-80k range for very talented and hard working salespeople. Be familiar with competitor’s products. Study the cars other dealerships are selling, and learn why it would be more beneficial for your customer to buy from your dealership. Know every model and option your company offers as well as those of your competitors.

As a young unemployed man who is about to graduate from college, the first thing I want is a brand spanking new hot hatch or some other type of fancy sports car that is way out of my price range. How often did you have to deal with customers such as myself, and did they usually leave with what they wanted? How often did they have to return their cars for something more economical? What usually ended up being the backbreaker?

Some argue that this is creepy. It is unless you treat it correctly. The courses cost less than a commission on a single sale but yet can improve your paychecks ten fold. You should see results immediately. Broadly speaking, OEMs have more leeway than suppliers to implement aspects of this road map — largely because they are at the top of the food chain and in a better position to influence ground rules than those below them. Given these constraints, suppliers should focus on two areas. First, they should position themselves in a profitable part of the vehicle ecosystem. Whether the end product is differentiated or a commodity, suppliers need to be sure they have the best organizational and operational capabilities for their niche in the current and future industry structure. Second, they need to optimize their business model. For suppliers of commodities, this involves a relentless focus on minimizing costs. For other suppliers that are able to differentiate their products or operations — through technology innovation, patents, an advantageous manufacturing footprint, or superior logistics and supply chains — the challenge is to build upon these assets by creatively upgrading them while enjoying the benefits of the price premium. In short, suppliers must recognize the world they inhabit and make sure that they can effectively navigate it.

While foreign and domestic brands continue to battle out for dominance in the traditional auto market, Chinese brands are emerging as the clear winner in the NEV market. A designation which includes electric vehicles as well as hybrid and fuel-cell automobiles, NEVs have emerged as a politically significant sector among policymakers: while the central government has included NEV development as an aspect of China’s various Five Year Plans since 2001, it was not until 2010 when the State Council, China’s cabinet, classified NEVs as a strategic emerging industry, a designation allowing investors to qualify for various incentive policies to help develop the sector. In 2012 the State Council unveiled a development plan, the Notice of the State Council on Issuing the Planning for the Development of the Energy-Saving and New Energy Automobile Industry (2012-2020) (1) (Guofa [2012] No.22),which aimed to get at least 500,00 electric and hybrid vehicles on China’s roads by 2015.

The last one. Lady called on an ad car for Mercedes. C Class. Basic ad car for a payment. She had an old ratty Honda Accord that she owned outright, but it was worth $3500 at best. My manager back doored me to get the deal, and forced her into the F&I office to close her – without running her credit before hand for fear of “insulting her”. Totally backwards, and bad business. So she drives off with her new C Class Mercedes, to her house 50 miles away. Two days later I get called into the office, saying they could not get her financed the way they promised – she had a previous bankruptcy she didn’t disclose – so I had to unwind the deal. So I drove her shitty car back to her, took the Merc back to the dealership, and prompty got thrown under the bus by the manager. She complained that I sexually harrassed her (she must have been 50 something and there was no chance of that, even jokingly), that I lied about the price, that I lied about the payment, etc etc. She ended up getting the car in the end, and I quit as a result. There was no reason to stay in a business that would ruin my reputation for a nothing deal.

To date, Republic has focused primarily on pursuing the benefits of consolidation typical in the first stage of retail channel evolution. But some of its actions suggest the potential for truly game-changing retail evolution. When channel players, as opposed to manufacturers, are the winners in retail evolution, most often the one that leads in the first stage is the one that leads in other stages and reaps substantial benefits. Republic could be the first in the automotive industry to create an independent retail brand that actually “owns the customer.”

Some customers will come in and refuse to talk monthly payments. They may only want to talk about the total price of the car. In that case, if you are unable to lower the price of the car in order to complete the sale, offer them extra features such as 12 months road tax at no extra cost or other features that you can add that will make the price seem more fair for the customer but won’t cost you much.[3]

For example, suppose you used to have stellar credit and you’re used to getting rates like 1.9%.  But over the last few years you’ve hit some bumps in the road, had some medical expenses that weren’t paid, been 30 days late on your car payment a few times, rang up some credit card debt, etc., and as a result your credit score isn’t what it used to be.  But you aren’t aware of this when you start car shopping, because like most people you don’t pay much attention to your credit.  In those circumstances, I don’t want to be the guy who tells you the best rate you qualify for is 14.9%.  When I tell people things like that, their first reaction is to hit the ceiling. They think I’m trying to jack them up.  Then they go somewhere else, hoping to get some better news.  After two or three other dealers have told them “Yessir, 14.9% is the best we can do,” they finally accept reality and buy a car.  But I’ve lost a sale.  So I’d rather your bank or credit union set your expectations before I see you.

Having a relationship with a local mechanic will always pay off because you can throw business to each other consistently. If you’re offering maintenance seminars, have the mechanic come in to teach some basics. They’ll get exposure too and you’ll get some added exposure at their shop.

Get your marketing managers, back-end developers, writers, and a few into a room. Pinpoint the problems in the marketing strategy and what needs to change. Host two or three meetings with your team to find solutions and assign tasks with a deadline in place.

You want to make the sale, and you want to make it now, but that should never be the vibe you give off when working with customers. Purchasing a car is a big decision, and if a person feels pressured to make a quick decision, they may just decide to walk off your lot. Give people space and let them feel supported.
