This is the most important tip to follow when buying a used car. Whatever you do, you should never buy a car without first verifying what you are buying by running a history report. I get a ton of emails from people that ended up buying a used car and later finding out it had been wrecked. There are body shops that are professionals at making a car look good. It can happen to anybody. If the VIN isn’t clearly listed in the ad and the seller won’t give it to you then move on to the next car. They are most likely trying to hide something. Since you are normally buying a used car “As Is,” you will want to know about any problems before the purchase.

Increase customer satisfaction. Customer satisfaction and loyalty are rich veins of potential functional improvement. Manufacturers’ efforts are usually unsuccessful when they try to bribe the channel to improve customer service. Good performers in the channel end up getting paid for what they are already doing and the poor performers undertake short-lived, superficial steps to “manage the measurements.” Customer service in auto retailing is mostly about executing the basics well — fixing cars right the first time, keeping commitments, offering conveniences like pick-up and delivery where feasible. Service advisors and computer-driven follow-up calls will not regain ground lost to sloppy execution.

Setting your marketers to create email campaigns designed to educate or greet customers, or to create a loyalty program better than anything that currently exists will challenge them. It will mean research, constant maintenance, and dedication to the success of their project, but the return is monumental. Customers feel that with these features, car dealers can prove that they value the customers’ business as well as recognize their importance. Your marketers will have to find a way to communicate with those customers in a way that’s conversational yet not unprofessional. They’ll have to keep tabs on many subjects, and adjust their marketing accordingly, and they will have access to templates and other features that can make the emails interactive.

Also, they don’t invest in, or train their sales people. Even the vets. Product knowledge is only part of the job, but I NEVER see them going through the steps of asking questions. Again, poor training, lots of people on the sales floor = sheer numbers game (because of Murca loyalty and managers who can close the deal).

So let’s be nice and just say car dealers are practiced and aggressive negotiators. If they didn’t know how to maintain the upper hand, they’d be out of business. And a big part of keeping that upper hand isn’t about the details of the deal itself, so much as controlling the emotional balance of a negotiation. If they can pull your heartstrings and define the emotional context of a negotiation, the deal will fall into their hands.

It doesn’t give you bargaining power. These days, dealers commonly get a cut of the interest you are paying on a bank loan, so it is more advantageous for a dealer to finance the sale, he stands to make more money than if you bought the same car for the same price but paid cash.

That question gets at the crux of the whole matter. If it’s based on brand, then the hurdle of the dealership doesn’t matter. If it’s a type of car (say, you’re looking for a gas-saving sedan), then the dealership poses a larger problem.

If you’re selling cards in the European automobile market, you are going against Volkswagen, which sports the continent’s two top-selling models with the Golf and the Polo. Volkswagen, also first in overall market share, owns nearly a quarter of the European market. (It is 14th in the US.)

14. Don’t get caught up on only one aspect of a deal. There is more to an overall good deal than simply a low selling price. Pay attention to everything that’s being offered to you, including trade-in value, interest rates and additional costs.

When the salesman starts drawing the 4-square, say you want to negotiate on price, and price only. You can figure out your payments, etc. If he tries drawing the 4 square again, point at it and (politely) say something along the lines of “I know your general manager told you to use the 4-square, but I really don’t want to see it again. I like you as a salesman and would love to get you the commission for this sale, but we’re negotiating on final price, or not at all.”

That’s far too many, especially in the case of Chevrolet. When you think of a Chevy, what comes to mind? You might think of the Corvette or a truck like the Colorado or Silverado. But the image is fuzzy because GM has fractured the brand into so many pieces (including the Spark, the Cruze, the Volt, etc.) that some of those pieces wilt under the glare of auto retail inspection.

Do not let this number fool you however, as most do not, and those that do can easily be eclipsed salary-wise by someone selling regular cars in higher numbers at a “normal” car dealership. Plus, the latter salesmen also likely gets to take a loaner car home from time to time, where as the high end salesmen is lucky to take a model for a test drive by himself.
