3. Don’t be afraid to listen to dealership suggestions. I’m not talking about bait and switch, but salespeople offering really good alternatives. When I sold cars, it was common for people to come looking for a particular model because of its low sticker price, but then drive out with a nicer car at the same or a lower price, thanks to the special programs and incentives that they didn’t know existed.
Now that we see serious cracks in the walls protecting the traditional automotive distribution model, what will the future bring? According to McKinsey&Company’s ‘Innovating Automotive Retail ‘ report, more than one-third of customers would consider buying a car online. Now, are you sure whether you’re encouraging this trend for your own customers?
No I hadn’t. I tend to get my loans from a credit union, where paying ahead is encouraged, and if you lose your source of income, they’ll give you a few months off of payments without penalty. Also, every overdraft fee I’ve charged was immediately forgiven, as long as I was able to get my balance back to positive relatively quickly. Never had to pay for a checking account, or any of that other crap that regular banks always pull on people.
A rule of thumb: If you’re taking out a loan to pay for your car, your car payment shouldn’t be more than 20 percent of your take-home pay. If you’re sticking to a tight budget, you may want to spend even less. Used cars will need a little extra attention from time to time: new tires, maintenance and the like. And then there are the other ownership costs shoppers sometimes forget to account for, such as fuel and insurance.

Although unit sales might have hit a peak in 2016, the months and years ahead are expected to be strong by historical standards. However, to avoid a sharp decline in top- and bottom-line results, marketers should make more effective use of digital channels and tools to optimize spend per vehicle and more precisely target buyers with a higher propensity to close.
Also interesting is looking at conversions to find out which campaigns ended in sales. Set this up using Goals in Google Analytics underneath the admin section. Basically, you tell Google Analytics, where do I want visitors to go? This would be a VDP page, maybe an Hours and Directions page, or a Request a Quote page.

The salesman who works with it every day knows what he’s doing with the 4-square a lot better than you do. Any attempt to deviate the conversation to monthly payments, or anything other than final price, is an attempt to get you to pay more money. It’s often very hard to get salespeople to discuss final price. They’d much rather talk payments, because payments can hide what you actually end up paying. A monthly payment of $200 on a 2012 Civic with $5000 down sounds great, until you realize that it’s a 5 year loan and you’re paying 20 grand for the base model that MSRPs at 15.
The question will be how much MasterCard charges for that financing and whether Basware will link to any other financing providers, whether banks or perhaps nontraditional players like hedge funds or pension funds.
So here we are in the first week of 2017. It’s a new year and I’m betting a lot of people are planning on buying a new (or used) car sometime in the coming year.
