While automobile manufacturers like Kia and MINI use social channels to blast out branding and awareness campaigns for a national audience, more intimate and direct efforts occur at local levels, typically among auto retailers and dealerships. Toronto-based auto retailer Pfaff Automotive Partners used a high-tech spin for its latest marketing campaign by ad agency Lowe Roche without relying on social media. Pfaff placed white Porsche 911s in the driveways of 50 Toronto residences in tony neighborhoods as part of an innovative direct mail marketing campaign. to select the residences, Pfaff reviewed its customers’ purchasing trends and then narrowed down its list to those living in homes in the $2 million range.
Now, don’t take this the wrong way. We understand that pulling all newspaper ads only gives more power to your competitors. The point we’re trying to make is that you can have more control over your success with digital than with print, and that can make the difference between a bit of profit and a lot of profit.
A study by Dealer.com revealed that, “Twenty-eight percent of the buying population feels that social media greatly influences the narrowing of their brand or model consideration. Twenty-seven percent said social media greatly influences their identification of a dealership from which to purchase.” 3 In addition to the influence of social media on purchases in general, the study also found that, “Approximately two-thirds of those who use Facebook in the automotive purchase process indicated that a friend’s favorable post about a brand or vehicle positively impacts their own opinion of that brand or vehicle, and 69 percent indicated that a friend’s favorable post about a dealership positively impacts their opinion of the dealership.”3 With statistics like that, you neglect Facebook at your dealership’s peril. The question is what are car buyers looking for on your Facebook page?

Cost and customer-service improvements are necessary but not sufficient to transform auto retailing channels. Realizing the full potential of these programs is not possible without a reasonable view of the different customer segments that should be targeted; the appropriate mix and level of marketing and distribution functions needed for each segment, and the best portfolio of distribution formats and channels to reach the targets.

Redesign distribution models.Upward of 15 percent of a car’s cost typically goes to distribution. There is of course some variation by country and segment; for instance, fleet sales are less expensive than retail. However, the percentage is generally higher than it needs to be. Although OEMs are locked into dealer relationships in the U.S. and Europe by complex and often antediluvian rules, they should begin to explore and lobby for approaches that will reduce their costs by using more efficient channels to reach car buyers. These changes in the distribution system should ultimately aim to cut costs by minimizing the number and expense of retail outlets and using technology for better inventory control.

You just started as the new GM of a pre-owned dealership with three locations. The owners understand that car sales, at the end of the day, is a face-to-face business. They’ve hand-picked their sales teams and provide regular training sessions throughout the year. But there’s one problem: they’re not getting enough traffic to the dealership.
All of it ends in the ability of the Audi to drive 700 miles using one tank of gas. It’s a long three plus minutes to get to the final payoff with lots of beauty shots of the Audi driving the open road. Unlike a lot of fuel saving vehicle ads there is no information about how many MPGs the car produces or what benefits diesel may have over other fuel economical cars, just that it’s better than driving with an odd over-sharing limo driver.
It all begins with your local involvement. People tend to trust businesses more when they are fully involved in community events in some way. Whether that means you network with other business owners, you volunteer for local charities, or you sponsor local events or teams, when people know you, they’re more likely to buy a used car from you.
Unfortunately, the infographic doesn’t have a similar viral impact of say Intel’s Museum of Me which did some similar things; though, to be fair, the Intel idea requires significantly more budget to do. Intel created a personal video that brought people’s Facebook content into a museum like walkthrough. Perhaps a personal museum of BMW content shared by the person and their friends could showcase interaction with the brand in a more interesting way than an infographic.
To me that seems like a great deal to take advantage of if the car is spanking new and hasn’t been sitting in the lot for a year. I’m talking about something like a 2014 Mazda Cx-5. Are costumers getting screwed over in that sort of deal? Especially if a new 2013 model was $1000 cheaper? I guess, how much would a dealer make off selling a car that has been out 2 months at invoice price?

Try to work on commission. Most car salespersons will get paid a base salary of $40,000 USD or an hourly wage of $20-$25 USD. Over time, your salary may increase based on your sales. To increase your income, you can work on commission where you earn a certain amount of money based on each car you sell. Working on commission can help to motivate you to sell and increase your pay.
Get your business on e-mapping services such as Yahoo! Maps, Bing Maps and Google Maps. Once you’ve done so, your company will come up when people search for car dealers in your area. Be sure to create a website and social media pages for your dealership and update your inventory daily. Make videos of the cars you’re selling to post on your website and social media platforms. You can also embed these films in emails you send to prospective customers.

Social media in the automotive industry is about far more than just attracting customers by placing adverts and aping their Instagram habits. In fact, increasingly the entire car-buying process takes place over social media.
An added bonus of using a personalised app is that you can use your own images and colour schemes from your website and Facebook page and tailor the app to suit your needs without having to write any code. The app can also be submitted to Android and the iOS store simply and easily using an online form rather than struggling to submit to the stores themselves, making for a much quicker, painless process.
While not the most original of marketing channels, we still get 80-90% of our used car leads through Craigslist. I run the internet side and we use CL Autopilot (http://clautopilot.net) to advertise about 20 vehicles (low to mid) at a time. Free and works great.
However, for those just starting out and relying mostly on store walk-in traffic or traffic to the dealership from the Internet, they are paid hourly minimum wage or a little higher depending on the store.
– Make sure you provide sufficient contact information. Some dealers make it incredibly difficult to contact them, which doesn’t give a great impression of customer service. If you can’t offer more than just a contact form, then make a commitment to answer it in a short time frame and stick to it.
Look for true nano target advertising from the companies on the bleeding edge. The ability to offer the right car, at the right price, at the right time, to the right audience, through the right media channel is totally possible. Moreover, the technology exists to source the right inventory to make the process repeatable. This will create a seismic shift in advertising, meaning much of the currently wasted budget can be reallocated to other efforts (hopefully, it’s directed towards human resource management).
Once you find a good prospective car, don’t run out to see it. Call the seller first. This is a good way to establish a relationship with the seller and verify the information about the car. You can ask private-party sellers why they’re parting with a car, or whether it has any mechanical problems. And if you’re buying from a dealership, a phone call (or text) is the best way to ensure the car is still in stock.
Be it via emails, call centres, SMS, contact page on website, or even a call to the showroom itself – make sure that every channel is available for the customer to approach you with comments, questions, feedback or appointment requests and put auto dealership customer feedback on top priority. Respect the customers’ time and give them the means to contact you at all times with absolutely any queries. No “let me just check with my manager ” unless absolutely necessary. No scripted telephonic conversations. No fake greetings or smiles. This also involves empowering employees with the freedom to take certain decisions which will work in the best interest of the organization.
Consumers don’t have the time to bounce around from dealership to dealership to get the information they’re looking for, with most only visiting two dealerships on average. That’s why it’s incredibly important for dealerships to actually appear on mobile SERPs when a user is ready to visit and make a purchase.
BMW dealerships are almost always full of douchebags. Same with Porsche. The only really approchable ones I’ve ever met in the luxury segment were Lotus and Aston Martin. Those guys will drink with the customer in the middle of the day.

11. It’s smart to ask if you can drive the car home and park it in your garage. Most dealerships will go along. Yes, I have seen people buy cars that didn’t fit their garage or parking spot. There’s no clause in the sales contract for returning a car because it doesn’t fit your garage.
Act confident and excited to be at the interview. Talk to the interviewer in a professional, friendly manner. This will help them get a sense of your personality and whether you would make a good salesperson.
