That same kid who wants a car and has no job may be lined up for an engineering degree, has a long term girlfriend and a baby on the way. He may want that sports car, but unless you find out the full story, wants will lose to needs, and you’ll be ass out.

Study and analyze what’s making them tick or what’s making you do better than them. See how they engage with their customers and outdo them by doing it better. Ask friends & family to visit your dealership as a third party and ask them for their honest, objective feedback via auto dealership survey. Get them to also call your call centers to understand if there’s any loophole in the customer service department that you could have missed. Every interaction with your brand has to be a knock out for your customers and if it means that you will have to test it out inside out, be prepared to do it.

Learn the cars on hand, any specials your dealership is offering, cars that may be good for people with bad credit, and anything else that could be beneficial to communicate to your customer.[7]

It is impossible to really know how well a used car was taken care of by the prior owners. No matter how many inspections you do or how many reports you run, unless a mechanic tears the engine and transmission down, you’ll never know what hidden issues are lurking. My advice is that you should consider buying a new car that fits your budget so that you will be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty if there are any problems. You won’t get the bang for the buck or have as “nice” of a car, but you can avoid headaches and expenses.

That group will account for more than 40% of your market soon, so taking chances with your marketing now might just pay off. He would appear upset by my gall, seemingly perturbed by my “unfair” demands. Had I offended him? Did I cross an invisible line? Well, in this case, it’s more likely that he was exaggerating, hoping I’d retreat. “People tend to like human interactions to be pleasant,” says Pham, “so negotiators will inflate their emotions hoping the other party will seek closure.”

Many of the most important auto industry innovators today are developing Web-based services, leading some to predict that the most important automotive company of the next century will be a software-based company. Republic Industries, for instance, expects sales to reach $1 billion on the World Wide Web by the year 2000. Estimates vary, but some studies have shown that with some cars, as many as 40 percent of customers gather information from the Internet. 23. Follow Up. Follow up on everything whether it is sold new car customers, used car customers, “Be Backs” or customers you sold a year or more ago. Stay in touch through your “CRM” (customer relationship management tool) and ask for referrals because these car buyers can provide you with future sales and income. That group will account for more than 40% of your market soon, so taking chances with your marketing now might just pay off. That’s not to say that car dealers should rush into marketing gambles without weighing the good and the bad. There’s nothing wrong with playing it safe. But marketing isn’t something you can do well by standing still. In the words of Sir Ken Robinson, an English education expert, “If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original.” So get ready to try new things. And don’t be afraid to try new marketing ideas. Just know that not every one will be a hit.

21. Be very careful about co-signing a car loan. If the person for whom you co-sign stops paying, you’re on the hook for the money, or the poor credit reporting, or both. I can’t count the number of car shoppers who’ve run into trouble because of co-signing for friends, family or co-workers. The bank doesn’t care that your ex-boyfriend was supposed to make the payments and that you just helped him get the loan. That repo now belongs to the both of you.

So what keeps people in car sales, if the money isn’t spectacular? Well, it’s a matter of perception and personality, in my opinion. One day you may sell nothing — and make nothing. The next day you may hit a home run and make $1000. Then you make another $100, and later on get a bonus from the manufacturer and make another hundred, for $1200 for a few hours work. Not too bad. That’s what keeps the car salesman going: the hope that next time, he or she is going to hit one out of the park. It’s a gambler’s mentality. But if you’re in commissioned sales, you have to have a bit of the gambler in you.

On that same note, China is becoming more urban as populations migrate to the nation’s largest cities. In those cities, the need for an automobile is not as urgent. In fact, to reduce pollution, many Chinese cities have seen an increase in car sharing, which means fewer will see the need to buy a new car, and public transportation is still immensely popular in the cities.

While some dealerships will hire applicants with no experience, most seek candidates with at least some sales background. It is therefore wise to start preparing in high school. Take courses in economics and business foundations to develop a basic understanding of finance. Get a part-time job that involves customer sales and/or service to hone communication skills and get comfortable with meeting new people in a professional environment.

A few years ago the popular wisdom was to get your financing from a bank or a credit union, because the dealership’s financing was more expensive.  That’s no longer the case.  Most of the time, my Finance Department can beat your local bank or credit union, sometimes by a substantial margin.  However, I would still recommend going to your bank or credit union first, even if you don’t end up using their financing in the end.  Why?  Because, as a salesperson, I would rather someone else be the first to educate you on what you don’t qualify for.  Let them be “the Bad Guy.”  Let me be the hero who gets you a better rate.

Most vehicle manufacturers offer a variety of “soft offer” services to complement their products –financing, insurance, extended service contracts and the like — a standard package rather than crafting high-value bundles tailored to specific consumer purchase/ownership segments.

As a standalone strategy, traditional methods may not be as effective as they used to be. The argument was stemming from their lack of “targeting.” But, if combined with a strong digital strategy, conventional advertising can be an effective way to spread awareness and attract a large audience.

Many CIOs are enjoying this kind of moment now, as companies everywhere face the business equivalent of a final exam for a vital class they have managed to mostly avoid so far: digital transformation.

Then develop a strategy to fill the information gaps and help to inject your dealership into their purchasing equation. If you can be of help you will establish a sense of goodwill and if they come to the conclusion they’re after a vehicle you sell, well you’ve staked a claim that they should buy from you.
