That’s what an effective sales process is like. Starting out takes extra energy. You have to put the plan in place and start the ride. Once you get that energy going, it becomes easier to maintain. You still have to pay attention to what you are doing, but sticking with it and realizing results becomes easier the more you pedal. However, if you start and stop, and start and stop, you’ll be exhausted … and have nothing to show for it.

“People are tired of seeing something in a TV commercial and then ordering it in a restaurant and it doesn’t look the same,” she says. “You don’t want it to look staged anymore. You want a burger to look like the cheese naturally dripped off and landed on the plate.”

The cause for concern for all automakers is that preference is most likely in the type of car. How do we know? If you look at the best-selling cars in America from February 2015, there is no overriding brand doing well.

No, those are always good deals. Ford and Mazda generally do them, and if you can take advantage of them, it’s probably better than any deal you’re going to get from any other brand or manufacturer. But my personal preference is that you love the car before you start looking at numbers. I really liked the Hyundai Sante Fe on paper, but after I drove it, I absolutely hated it. Same thing with the RX-8. Sexy as fuck, drove it, hated it. I had an opposite reaction to the Kia Forte – saw the numbers, thought it was meh, drove it – loved it.

I always go in negotiating a price with the assumption of financing (the car salesmen have always just assumed). Once I get the price as low as I can, I pay cash. I always thought this is the best buyers strategy

Try asking more directed questions like “Are you looking for a sedan or SUV today?” or “what type of vehicle can I help you find today?” Customers may still be disinterested in your help, but you have a lot better chance of keeping their attention and it will be much less awkward if you follow them around the showroom. This also allows customers to share their thoughts on the type of car they are looking for and allows you to match the needs of your customer with one of your vehicles.

Cars have changed a lot since the Ford Model T first rolled onto the market. along with the vehicles themselves, the way the automobile industry sells cars has changed too, and it’s largely thanks to social media. Social media has completely transformed the conventions of car sales in many ways. Here are just a few of them.

This is a great way to connect with them emotionally. Best case scenario, they will come back to your business and tell the world about the awesome surprise you gave them! Worst case scenario, their little doggy will walk around wearing the collar you sent in – subliminal branding messages are being sent anyways. This is a win-win innovation!

For example, suppose you used to have stellar credit and you’re used to getting rates like 1.9%.  But over the last few years you’ve hit some bumps in the road, had some medical expenses that weren’t paid, been 30 days late on your car payment a few times, rang up some credit card debt, etc., and as a result your credit score isn’t what it used to be.  But you aren’t aware of this when you start car shopping, because like most people you don’t pay much attention to your credit.  In those circumstances, I don’t want to be the guy who tells you the best rate you qualify for is 14.9%.  When I tell people things like that, their first reaction is to hit the ceiling. They think I’m trying to jack them up.  Then they go somewhere else, hoping to get some better news.  After two or three other dealers have told them “Yessir, 14.9% is the best we can do,” they finally accept reality and buy a car.  But I’ve lost a sale.  So I’d rather your bank or credit union set your expectations before I see you.

Let’s say you’ve got visitors reading your article on the best three family vehicles you sell. This is information targeting car buyers during the early moments in their journey – or as Google puts it, “Which car is the best?” and “Is it right for me?”

Trainees are exposed to the company’s brand, including its product lines and technology. They are taken through the sales process, including the important consultation techniques, and prepared to be able to handle sales independently from initial contact with customer to getting the sale.

Once you find a good prospective car, don’t run out to see it. Call the seller first. This is a good way to establish a relationship with the seller and verify the information about the car. You can ask private-party sellers why they’re parting with a car, or whether it has any mechanical problems. And if you’re buying from a dealership, a phone call (or text) is the best way to ensure the car is still in stock.

A 63 year old woman came in to buy a vehicle one Saturday. “The first way to not fall prey to others manipulating your emotions is to understand the process and what the other person’s going to do,” says Miller. “If you can anticipate it, it has no impact.” For example, a common tactic in negotiating is using the “good cop, bad cop” routine. One party will entice the other with a promising deal and then bring in someone else to play hardball. “You think you have a deal. You become emotionally attached to that deal. And then he takes himself out of the picture and brings in someone brand new that has no emotional attachment.”

Commercial shoots tend to have more unused food. Anderson says anything that’s still edible will be given to a food pantry. “I once donated an entire swordfish when we did a commercial for a fish restaurant,” she says. “We never even used it. So I kept it on ice and took it to a men’s homeless shelter. They were thrilled to have it.”

Therefore, the dealership model feels incredibly outdated, and we have less patience for it. (That’s why we’ve wondered if Carmax isn’t on to something in the used car arena.) In fact, there is sure to be a growing demand for manufacturers to cut dealerships out of the deal all together. Instead, just setting up distribution centers where you pick up your car after purchasing (and financing) online.

Don’t forget that it is important to understand you customer before you build your sales strategy. One place to start is by reviewing your customer’s annual report. Car salespersons must have excellent communication skills, be to sympathize with client’s purchasing needs, and have a resilient attitude in the face of rejection. On-the-job training is typical and the only formal education requirement is a high school diploma.

The Internet, and more precisely the rapid advancement of people’s access to the Internet, represents a tremendous change in the auto sales industry. What was once a mystery, the pricing of automobiles is now readily available to anyone with Internet access and some very basic Google skills.

Considering these disparate pressures on costs, there is no easy formula that OEMs or suppliers can use to improve their return on capital. The solution will likely come from a combination of actions. Part of the answer lies in consolidation, which reduces industry capital requirements by eliminating competition and combining two manufacturing and design footprints into one. To a degree, these goals explain 2016’s robust supplier M&A volume, continuing the trend of the previous year’s record deal value, according to PwC’s Global Automotive M&A Deals Insights Year-end 2016 report.

Data silos remain the enemy of efficient marketing strategies. Auto marketers do all they can to gain a unified view of their customer using data. Marrying data from CRM to social, customer loyalty and third-party data assets, then closing the feedback loop with analytics, seemed key for everyone in attendance at DRIVE.

“We have relations with 160 e-invoicing providers and we connect will all kinds of ERP systems,” he added. “If your ERP can generate any sensible data format, we can capture it and send it to the receiver.” This makes it different from EDI, an earlier electronic invoicing system, that required one-off connections between a supplier and a buyer.

Have strong math skills. A car salesperson will need to calculate interest rates and other fees for customers. You should have at least high school level math skills so you can estimate and calculate numbers for customers.[5]

You're also the least amount of hassle because we don't have to run your credit, we don't have to negotiate monthly payments, we don't have to worry about competing offers from different banks. You're what we call a "done deal" as soon as you walk in. Keep in control of the sales discussion and always be willing to walk away. If you do, you're more likely to come out with better results. Let the salesperson control the flow, and you're bound to be chewing bubble gum on the way home in your new car. The first thing a car salesman asks when you walk onto the lot is, “Do you want to take a test drive?” That’s because once you fall in love with the heated seats and surround-sound audio system, he can play to your emotional attachment to the car instead of the facts and figures of the deal. “The worst thing you can do is become emotionally attached to a deal because then it feels very hard to walk away,” says Miller. “If you’re not willing to walk away from a deal, you really can’t negotiate effectively.”

True. I would advise my customers paying with cash to simply go for a finance deal, and in something like 10 days just pay off the car. But you don’t discuss that with the manager or F&I guys. No one stands to make much money off that deal, but the customer saves.

Other than in price, there’s little reason to choose one brand over another. That means shoppers find their cars by looking at price, dealerships and types of cars (like, sedan vs. truck). With the exception of a few (most fitting into the luxury category), no one is building a true brand preference.

Most dealerships make 1.5% over invoice in profit. That’s usually $1250 for a new car, of which the sales person gets 25%. On a used car though, if they make $3000, it makes a difference. Most used cars are priced to profit by $1000 to $3500, depending on the market.

For most car dealers, social media feels like something you have to do instead of something you have to do well. This is the “everyone’s doing it so I guess we have to” mentality. It’s true you have to be on Facebook; it’s where people spend an inordinate amount of time online nowadays. But just being a part of it isn’t providing results.

The decline in profits on new cars has forced dealers to make up the shortfall by looking at what many have historically considered “filler” businesses: parts and service, used cars, financing and insurance, and fieets. The problem is that a conventional dealership is not necessarily positioned well to conduct all of these businesses because of their different economics, bases of competition and consumer purchasing patterns. Some dealers, for example, have set up dedicated bays to offer no-appointment quick-lube services to compete with independent outfits such as the Pennzoil Company’s Jiffy Lube and the Midas International Corporation’s muffier shops. However, the optimal retail density and overhead structure for the oil-change business are very different from those for new cars. (See Exhibit I.) Brick-and-mortar and real estate constraints will make it difficult for traditional dealers to develop truly competitive offerings in each individual dealer business even if they manage to overcome longstanding consumer mistrust.

Once you find a good prospective car, don’t run out to see it. Call the seller first. This is a good way to establish a relationship with the seller and verify the information about the car. You can ask private-party sellers why they’re parting with a car, or whether it has any mechanical problems. And if you’re buying from a dealership, a phone call (or text) is the best way to ensure the car is still in stock.

All of these experiences will provide new marketing opportunities. Dealers will have the chance to provide detailed content on connected car experiences that satisfy the “Want to know” need and help drive them to a “Want to do” moment faster.

As is typical for retail innovators, Republic is now striving to greatly improve the car-buying and ownership experience for consumers. Republic announced in September 1998 that it was not going to sell cars the old-fashioned way in Denver. Under the Denver plan, Republic will switch to a one-price, no-haggle sales approach similar to the one pioneered by the Saturn division of the General Motors Corporation. But Republic goes further than Saturn. Republic’s customers, the company announced, are to be offered “membership-style benefits that will give them access to a wide range of automotive retailing, service and financing options, along with vehicle rental discounts and other related products and services.” As the program develops, Republic says it will “introduce an integrated e-commerce shopping alternative and a comprehensive customer service center.” Republic plans to roll out the program nationwide to the more than 350 franchises it has acquired since 1995.

Unlike the dealership consolidators that are trying to reduce costs through scale economies in administration, advertising and service, Republic’s stated strategy is to manage actively vehicle life cycle while developing a proprietary channel brand. Another example of a company involved in external channel evolution is G.E. Capital Services, an extremely accomplished innovator. It has purchased Autobytel.com and is moving into used-car leasing.

Dealers who are really looking to take their mobile efforts to the next level, however, should create their own branded apps. Companies such as DMEautomotive can create a variety of different branded apps for your dealership. Apps should be genuinely useful to consumers, otherwise they won’t use them and your dealership won’t get any benefit. 36. When you’re on the used-car lot, take a look at the window sticker sales price. If that is the only price displayed, you likely have some wiggle room in the price. If the sales price on the sticker says one thing and there is a much lower price written on the window (or it’s being offered online), you’re likely at (or close to) the dealership’s lowest selling price.

The team at CBC leveraged what most would see as disadvantages for the dealership and turned them into real reasons to shop at Marc Motors Nissan. With an aging facility in a town not known for its affluence, we positioned the dealership as the “Low Overhead” dealer. This message promoted that although Marc Motors was off the beaten path and since they weren’t paying rent for a gleaming new dealership, they were able to pass the savings onto their customers. CBC was able to give Marc Motors a voice by concentrating on this consistent radio message that hit his core demographic relentlessly.

Use Twitter to Drive SalesMarketshare research discovered that in 2013, Twitter drove $716 million in car sales. Twitter continues to be a popular choice among auto consumers. Recent research by Canvs found that more than 327,000 auto-related tweets are sent out daily, and 75% of these are directly related to owning or shopping. Audis vary from good (A series) to great (S series) to oh my god just hold me while I lay in the wet spot (R series). Acuras are angular Hondas and don’t belong in the conversation.

Stay up to date on car makers and models. Know the car industry inside and out so you can answer any customer questions with ease. Being up to date on your car makers and models can also make it easier for you to recommend certain brands or models to customers. Read car magazines and newsletters. You know the drill. It’s always a hassle, even if you walk right in and point immediately to one car and say, “I’m buying that.” There are all kinds of documentation, the discussion over add-ons and, in most cases, the financing. (Dealerships make a killing on financing.)

My wife wanted a new car. She likes sports cars, so we went to a dealership to check out a BMW 135i. The salespeople were hanging out in the lot–as car salespeople without customers are wont to do–so they all watched us cruise through several rows of cars before parking in front of the 135is.

The good news is although there are hundreds of thousands of car sales professionals just like you I’d bet around 95% of them are doing nothing to market themselves or utilizing incorrect practices for personal branding.

Be it via emails, call centres, SMS, contact page on website, or even a call to the showroom itself – make sure that every channel is available for the customer to approach you with comments, questions, feedback or appointment requests and put auto dealership customer feedback on top priority. Respect the customers’ time and give them the means to contact you at all times with absolutely any queries. No “let me just check with my manager ” unless absolutely necessary. No scripted telephonic conversations. No fake greetings or smiles. This also involves empowering employees with the freedom to take certain decisions which will work in the best interest of the organization.

Because of automotive resource sites like Edmunds and NADA, consumers have the same amount of data and access that dealers do. They can now both get up-to-date information on pricing, availability and competitors FAST.

Prior to getting into car sales I had always been paid a salary or on an hourly basis. If I worked 40 hours a week, I was paid whatever the hourly wage was, times 40 hours. When I was salaried, I was getting a fixed amount each month, as long as I did my job. But after my first week in sales I realized I had just given up 50 hours of my life and hadn’t made one red cent. Because I hadn’t sold a car that week.

You can continue to do this until you’ve reached them or until they ask you to stop contacting them. Some people may get frustrated if you continue to call them, but look at it this way, those people probably weren’t going to buy from you anyways so you haven’t lost anything.
