Such organizations are not building in the capacity for change; they’re trying to get away with just doing it once rather than thinking about how they’re going to use digitalization as a means to constantly experiment and become a better company over the long term.

Ask good questions. After you greet customers, make sure you give them the opportunity to share what they are looking for, or to share that they aren’t sure what they want and so they just need time to look around.

The dramatic growth and power of Internet technology have greatly reduced the cost of obtaining information on features, price and availability. Consequently, customers are better equipped to extract what they want from dealerships. One of the pioneers of Internet marketing, Autobytel.com Inc., is working to speed response time from its participating dealers because it has learned that a staggeringly high proportion of its customers — 64 percent — buy within 24 hours of using its service to get price and availability quotes. So let’s be nice and just say car dealers are practiced and aggressive negotiators. If they didn’t know how to maintain the upper hand, they’d be out of business. And a big part of keeping that upper hand isn’t about the details of the deal itself, so much as controlling the emotional balance of a negotiation. If they can pull your heartstrings and define the emotional context of a negotiation, the deal will fall into their hands.

Our research indicates that a major portion of the leading companies in shareholder-value creation have innovated new models of distribution channels.1 In some industries it has been a manufacturer (for instance, Dell), and in other cases it has been a retailer (for instance, Home Depot Inc. or Wal-Mart Stores Inc.). Notably, it is either one or the other, but not both, that has led the way prospered, and it is typically a single company that captures the benefit. Most other competitors and partners suffer as a result.

Sorry, for the long winded introduction… my question is, when a situation like this occurs, who actually suffers at the dealership financially? I understand my constant issues were “annoying”, but did the sales rep have his commission reduced? Did the service department have to take a loss “against their numbers”? Or does the dealership eat the cost since it was their policy?

Take a look at your Facebook page and see how it compares to what car buyers are really looking for. If you have been posting too much about tire maintenance and not enough service promotions, try posting some specials for your Facebook fans and see the response. If this sounds like too much work, remember that “More than three quarters (77 percent) of dealers’ Facebook fans live within a 50-mile radius.”4

At my dealership the average commission is around $550 a car. That’s new and used combined. So if you’re an average salesman and you sell 10-12 cars a month, which is the national average, and each car you sell is a $550 commission, what have you made? $6600. Or $79,200 a year before taxes. Not bad, depending on where you live . . . but hardly the life of Donald Trump. When you consider the hours needed to make those sales, it’s even less impressive.

Despite its longevity, the traditional dealer channel leaves many people unhappy. Expect to see deeper personalization in premium vehicles. Soon our vehicles will have passwords, cloud integration, and even payment gateway access. This will set the stage for wider adoption across more brands and models.

However, China’s car sales growth has become dependent on tax discounts in recent years as pent-up demand diminishes. In 2016, passenger vehicle sales rose by 15.9% to 23.9m units, according to the China Passenger Car Association, with small vehicle sales rising by 21% and accounting for 70% of all passenger vehicle sales in the country. This growth revival was largely due to a 50% sales tax discount on small vehicles (those with engines up to 1.6 litres), with the relevant motor-vehicle purchase tax reduced from 10% to 5% until December 2016. In January 2017 this scheme was partially extended until December that same year. Despite this, we expect sales growth to slow to 4.5%, the slowest rate since sales declined in 1994. An even more sluggish rate, of 2.6%, will be recorded in 2018.

You will be put together, tested and tried on by customers and sales managers that will at times have you wanting to knock them out, cuss them out, throw them out or walk out yourself. If you are currently a car salesman you know exactly what I am talking about because you have already had your on the job car salesman education. One of the sayings that I try to remember is: “Don’t get mad, get even by selling them a car”. Then I put on my game face and do my best to sell them a car and make a nice big front end gross. It doesn’t always work, but it does more times than it doesn’t. Sometimes being a car salesman means we just have to suck it up to sell a car.

Everyone knows that Google prefers responsive websites. Google gave us all plenty of time to prepare for this event over the past few years. You would think more people would pay attention to the things Google says it likes.

Pricing on a C63 is easy. It’s about 100k. Monroni sticker is on the window. We don’t move on specialty cars, for the most part. You know it’s awesome. We know it’s awesome. Negotiating kinda cheapens the love affair, and I think we both know it. You’re going to be happy with that car at both full price and at a discount, so there’s no crime in holding some profit. But given a choice, I’d like to give you a little something extra as a token of the shared enthusiasm. I love giveaways like that.

The third stage of retail evolution involves changing the fundamental retailing paradigm. The prevailing paradigm in the automotive industry is that car companies design and build cars; their dealers distribute and service them. An alternative paradigm is that car manufacturers are in the business of creating economic assets that must be managed over the life of the assets to create and capture value. Leasing forces manufacturers to confront this new paradigm, and some creative automakers are beginning to think about how to exploit its value more fully. With its extensive business base and multiple automotive operations, Republic has the capacity to test and pioneer such new concepts. Republic also brings other critical elements to the party — an outsider’s perspective and an innovative spirit.

This isn’t a cutthroat business. You just need the right education before hitting the floor. I’ve seen many salespeople come and go, but the ones who last are usually the ones who have gone through the academy.

Your first inclination may be to approach a customer and say, “Welcome to XYZ Dealership, I’m John. What can I help you with today?” That, however, is wrong. Never forget the Dale Carnegie quote from How to Win Friends and Influence People: “Remember that a person’s name is, to that person, the sweetest and most important sound in any language.” Get the customer’s name immediately — “Welcome to XYZ Dealership, I’m John – and you are?” — remember it, and use it throughout the entire sales process.

While the minimum educational requirement for a car salesperson is a GED or a high school diploma, an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in business or communications can be beneficial. Training programs in automobile repair are available and can be useful as well. Management and senior positions may require education beyond high school, making the bachelor’s or associate’s degree desirable. A student interested in becoming a car salesperson should take courses in automotive technology, sales, business, computers, communication and mathematics.

Transformation to a Professional Salesperson or FAILURE. (approx. 9 – 12 months) – Within stage #3 is when you will hit a crossroads during your car sales career. You will either “get it”, and transform into a professional car salesperson, or you will “burn out” and quit or turn into a “use-to”, a term used to describe individuals that sold cars previously and don’t anymore. Apparently they were not very good at it.

As well as listing your vehicles online, you should also be careful to include content that shows that you are knowledgeable in your field to build a higher level of trust between you and the reader. Stage #4: Professional Retail Car Salesperson. (approx. 12 months) – Congratulations you are now a professional retail car salesperson. You have a realization that YOU make YOUR sales career. You hang out and listen to successful peers. You complete your follow-up on a consistent basis. You’re sold on the dealerships selling system and you don’t cut corners.

How many cars would you need to sell at $125 a pop to make a decent living? Do you think you could sell 3 cars a week? That’s about 12 a month — not too bad. works out to $1500 a month. Or $18,000 a year before taxes. Hardly rolling in dough.

I took a class through National Auto Academy a little over a year ago to get into this business. It was a smooth transition from the classroom to the sales floor. I’ve been one of the top three salesmen in my showroom since I started!

Talk exchanges. Ask customers if they have a vehicle they wish to part exchange. It’s good to do this before you begin showing them new cars, because you can figure out the customers’ buying motive, and will also be able to see what they feel is lacking in old car. It also allows the customer to relax when they begin looking at new cars, because they know their old car is already taken care of.[2]

A positive attitude, honesty, strong communication skills and relationship-building abilities all contribute to the right car sales attitude. Unfortunately, the infographic doesn’t have a similar viral impact of say Intel’s Museum of Me which did some similar things; though, to be fair, the Intel idea requires significantly more budget to do. Intel created a personal video that brought people’s Facebook content into a museum like walkthrough.  Perhaps a personal museum of BMW content shared by the person and their friends could showcase interaction with the brand in a more interesting way than an infographic.

Detroit-based General Motors, which operates under several brands such as Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick, is the third largest advertisers in the U.S., spending 3.5 million U.S. dollars in advertising in 2015. Also based in the Detroit area, Ford Motor Company was the sixth largest advertiser in the country that year. Italian group Fiat Chrysler Automobiles ranked eighth with a total of ad spend of 2.25 billion U.S. dollars in 2015, investing an average of 2.16 thousand U.S. dollar on advertising per each Fiat vehicle sold that year. Carmakers are some of the major spenders in the advertising market in the U.S., but they are not the only ones within the automotive industry. Advertising expenditure of the automotive rental and leasing industry was estimated at 492 million U.S. dollars in 2016, whereas automotive dealers and gas stations were projected to spend about 983 million U.S. dollars that year.

The way that you have to do that is to integrate your customer database, which is your DMS (data management system) or your CRM (consumer relationship management), with your website. When you integrate these tools, when I go to your website, it might say, “Hello Scott,” (like the Momentum site below) or even more interestingly, it might show, “Great to see you again, is it time to service your vehicle?”.

As an example, if someone looks at a red truck on your website, they would receive an email with information about the red truck, they would see ads for the red truck, and your sales team would be alerted about the potential customer.

There is another issue that global automotive market have to deal with in gaining preference among target audiences. Yes, those pesky dealerships that few, if anybody, like to frequent. Rebranding automobiles means looking at this model too.

Sometimes, it’s best to assume that a potential customer walking onto your lot has had a bad car-buying experience in the past, or they’ve heard plenty of stories from people who have. This gives you an opportunity to change the way you sell and not just make a sale, but hopefully, alter their perception — for the better — of car salespeople.

Automotive companies face a number of unique marketing challenges. Incentive programs for Customers and Dealers, for example, are constantly evolving and costly to execute. Generally taking the form Financing, Leasing and Cash Back programs, incentives are continuously offered, thus making it difficult to discern their ability to drive new versus repeat purchases. The vehicle purchase cycle is also much longer than for most products. This increases the importance of striking the right mix of short-term, product-focused and long-term, brand-focused marketing investments. Other major challenges include pricing, innovation and an intense competitive environment. The automotive industry is a complex system. Since then, I have talked multiple people out of even driving by the first, and have gotten 3-4 referral checks from the second. Not to mention the countless other people I have sent their way without bothering to bring up the bird dog.

If you like the car, consider having it inspected by a mechanic before you buy it. If you don’t have a mechanic, Google and Yelp are good places to read local shops’ reviews. A pre-purchase inspection costs about $100 and can alert you to problems you may not find yourself. It’s a smart investment.
