There’s a lot to it, but I had a bad experience with a new sales manager who threw me under the bus to please a customer who lied about their experience with me. Consumers looking to purchase or service a vehicle are doing their research primarily online, with 50% of recent car buyers and 69% percent of service customers saying they only visited one dealership before buying/servicing.

Let’s say you write an article about your end-of-the-year clearance sale. You can use it as a blog post on your site, change it into an email, into a landing page, tweet it out, and add it to your Facebook page. You can repurpose that same content across multiple channels.

Do include your contact details in case there is anything you haven’t covered. Often it is those that make life simpler for the consumer – by operating as a one-stop information shop – that make the sales.

The car dealer CANNOT charge you for using the vehicle you purchased from them. For instance, it cannot charge you for the miles put on the car during the 10-day period.  However, you are responsible for any physical damage to the car during the time it is in your possession.

The marketing environment is making a hard shift. It’s moving away from fragmentation to consolidation in products. The winners? Dealers who can use technology differently within a newer operations model that combines different functional roles and simplifies time-wasting activities.

When you have the right tools and services at your fingertips, building a website, social media pages and creating ads that look really nice isn’t difficult. In fact, it’s actually extremely cost effective. Something as simple as embedding a video you shot yourself from your own phone can have a huge impact on how consumers view your dealership. Negotiate a price that is 5-15% less than what the dealer is asking for. It’s not that hard. Lookup “negotiate price used car” on google and read up. When you’re done negotiating, tell them to print/fax the final offer you agree on and then take the car to a dealer specializing in that make, or a specialty auto shop, and have them do a ‘pre-purchase inspection’ ($100-200). You will need to sort this out with the shop a day ahead (or two). Let the dealer know ahead of time that you will be doing this. It’s okay and expected. The shop doing the inspection will tell you if there are any serious problems. If so, abandon the sale or negotiate lower.

This situation is changing. Automobile retailing is evolving at an unprecedented rate. At one level the future implications are clear. These include multiple alternative formats and channels; greater unbundling of dealer businesses; increased value through the channels (improved service and selection at a lower cost); more emphasis on life-cycle relationships, and probably tighter relationships between manufacturers and consumers. Specifically who will win and lose is much less clear. The odds are not with the manufacturers, but the game is not lost. To win they must shake off old habits and practices and then visualize and implement revolutionary ways to sell cars.

The digital transformation of the automotive industry is well underway. The industry is becoming more connected everyday, and the connected consumer no longer has time for lengthy discussions with a salesperson, or hopping around dealerships looking for the right car. Marketers must speak to their customers at every stage of the customer journey, including in the decision making moments that happen on the go on their smart phones and even post-purchase. In order to thrive in this new environment, automotive marketers must embrace change and adjust their strategies to ensure that they are reaching the customer in these key micro-moments!

The salesman who works with it every day knows what he’s doing with the 4-square a lot better than you do. Any attempt to deviate the conversation to monthly payments, or anything other than final price, is an attempt to get you to pay more money. It’s often very hard to get salespeople to discuss final price. They’d much rather talk payments, because payments can hide what you actually end up paying. A monthly payment of $200 on a 2012 Civic with $5000 down sounds great, until you realize that it’s a 5 year loan and you’re paying 20 grand for the base model that MSRPs at 15.

Car salesmen are an important part of the automotive industry. There primary mission is to make customers interested in cars and sell as many cars a possible to bring in profit for the dealership. The entire process of persuading the customer to buy a car could take hours. Still, many people find car sales a thrilling occupation because of the large commissions a person can make. There are several qualifications that are required to become a car salesman.

In the 12 years I worked in car dealerships, I was involved in thousands of car sales, and I learned a lot of things that make car shopping easier for people. In this article, you’ll find some of my favorite tips. Some need no explanation. Others do, and so I’ve added some insights to help you see why they’re important.

The National Automobile Association (NADA) sponsors various types of training. NADA’s Academy offers six different programs for careers with a dealership. Among these are Operations, Department Management, Fleet Sales, and Consumer Sales. The NADA General Dealership Management Academy prepares professionals for general management roles and includes classes in financial analysis and decision making. NADA’s Special Ops program provides in-depth specialized training for sales, service, and parts managers.

Even though those tend to be the most common steps to the sale, I’ve found that the best approach I’ve ever used and/or been trained in, was Grant Cardone Sales Training, it literally saved my car sales career. His approach is very “21st Century,” non-confrontational and extremely effective.
