Traditional advertising will always be a key component to automotive marketing. But the future is pointing toward SEO as the way to consistently build and grow businesses. What separates SEO and traditional advertising is one simple thing: customers who are in the market find you, instead of the other way around.
The Ford Motor Company is the one American brand that you could safely call a branded house. Sure, it owns Lincoln, but its Ford brand carries the rest of the lineup and accounts for an industry-leading 13.8% market share in the US. (That is, if you count GM, Dodge and Jeep as separate brands.)

I wouldn’t say I’m loyal to that dealership by any means, but I’ve probably said more good things than bad about them because they did fix the issues I brought to their attention. I wouldn’t have bought used had I not had this “week long test drive” so to speak. Had no guarantee been in place, I would have saved the extra grand or two and bought from a private party.
2) If you find sales folks who are constantly negative, stay away from them. You’ll spot them right away… they usually stand off by themselves waiting for “ups” (folks coming on to the lot), smoking like chimneys and poppin’ TicTacs. They usually watch the clock like madmen, too. They float from lot to lot, burning through many contacts in the biz and finally ending up out of the biz altogether. They will leave a dealership at the drop-of-a-hat… always looking for “greener grass”.

Redesign distribution models.Upward of 15 percent of a car’s cost typically goes to distribution. There is of course some variation by country and segment; for instance, fleet sales are less expensive than retail. However, the percentage is generally higher than it needs to be. Although OEMs are locked into dealer relationships in the U.S. and Europe by complex and often antediluvian rules, they should begin to explore and lobby for approaches that will reduce their costs by using more efficient channels to reach car buyers. These changes in the distribution system should ultimately aim to cut costs by minimizing the number and expense of retail outlets and using technology for better inventory control.
Then, your future follow-up, along with ad campaigns, emails, etc. will be centered on the customer’s needs. All you have to do is export the list of people with certain needs and send a targeted follow-up that addresses those needs.
Inbound marketing attracts interested people to the dealer’s website or store. Inbound tactics include showing up on Google, social media, and other efforts that are created for people looking for information.
Starbucks has done an excellent job of storytelling on social. Coffee is more than just a caffeinated experience; it is about time with friends, relaxing, and indulgence. And the automotive industry can do the same. The company Purple featured a great blog, “How Storytelling is Shaping the Automotive Industry,” which showcases 7 examples of excellent storytelling campaigns by auto brands.

I’m the founder of DealerRefresh. I got my start in the dealer business when I was 18. From there I’ve worked throughout several departments within fixed to variable ops. Whether it’s managing the desk, perfecting sales process or studying online marketing and media trends, I absolutely love this business and the challenges it brings. On top of keeping up with DealerRefresh, I consult with dealerships and key industry businesses. My passion has been and continues to be helping dealers leverage new media to sell and improve customer service.

Some argue that this is creepy. It is unless you treat it correctly. Your salesperson does not say: “I saw you looking at this website, do you want to buy a car?” Instead, they need to think about providing a resource. It’s appropriate to say: “We’re reaching out to customers showing interest and we wanted to see if we could help.” Another way to say it: “We’re reaching out to VIP customers and want to see if there are any resources we can provide.”
Hardest part of the job was dealing with time. You work 60 hours a week, on average, and people generally have no respect for your schedule. We’re people too, and some of us want to have a life outside of work. I never had a sick day. I never had a day off. I lived in that dealership.
This is the idea that when you go to an automotive website, your experience won’t mirror the experience of other visitors. Whether you’re logging in as someone who just bought a vehicle or you’ve never visited the store, the site should look different. Personalization is the idea that your website and your digital channels change based on someone’s history. So how do you do that?
The short answer is that most car salespeople don’t earn a whole hell of a lot of money. Dealership salespeople average about 10 car sales per month, and earn an average of about $40k per year. If you do the math, that’s about $330 per car.

That equity has carried over into today as Volkswagen still appears to be modern, stylish and simple. It’s a concise brand that fits well into the European model that does not have the big, wide roads of the US.

The fact that there is no formal education track to become a car salesman presents a unique challenge to individuals wishing to enter the field. Whenever the route to something is not clearly defined, reaching it becomes potentially more difficult. Being a car salesman is not just about selling a product to a customer. It is both an art and a science. Personality, appearance, authenticity, and ability to persuade all play a part in this career. Because many people walk into a dealership and already have a negative perception of the car sales business, it is the job of a car salesman to change this image into something positive for the customer. The days of fast talking, hard-closing sales are over and have been replaced by the need for professionalism, courtesy, and service. Product knowledge is key, but salespeople have to be able to comfortably interact with customers and earn their trust and confidence.
34. Before you buy, get a good idea of what maintenance will be required and how much it will cost. If you buy a car that is nearing 75,000 miles, for example, look in the service manual for the recommended service at that mileage. Then go to the service department and ask how much that will cost. Don’t forget to check on tire costs.

Come backs are never good. People who come back for something more economical in a short period of time are bad things. It means you didn’t get it right the first time. It means you didn’t ask the right questions. It means you fucked up for the deal, and instead of a happy return customer, you’ll have explain the intracacies of depreciation in the parking lot. It’s not a pleasant experience. So get it right the first time, every time.
Your car dealer online marketing campaigns should go hand in hand in order to make the most of your budget and your efforts. Post signup forms on your website and social media pages that encourage visitors to subscribe to your email marketing newsletters and text message campaigns. Your email marketing newsletters should have social sharing and social following buttons that allow subscribers to easily share your content with a wider audience. Whenever you send out marketing messages, think about how you can integrate that message in with your other marketing efforts.
Social media in the automotive industry is about far more than just attracting customers by placing adverts and aping their Instagram habits. In fact, increasingly the entire car-buying process takes place over social media.

While the policy support has been strong, the results have been mixed; in 2015 China sold around 207,000 NEVs, well short of its 500,000 goal. While this number more than doubled to 507,000 in 2016, at this rate it seems unlikely that the country will meet its ambitious 7m annual sales target by 2025. However, the government is keen to step up the pace. New regulations, issued on September 28th, require carmakers to gather credits for NEV sales that are equivalent to 10% of their sales volumes by 2019 and 12% by 2020. The rules apply to all carmakers that produce or import more than 30,000 vehicles a year for the Chinese market.
Greet customers right away. As soon as customers arrive at the dealership, be there to greet them with a “Hello” or “Hi there.” You can then introduce yourself and ask the customer how they are doing. You may say, “Good morning! Welcome to Woodland Motors. My name is Sara, and you are?”
