Talk exchanges. Ask customers if they have a vehicle they wish to part exchange. It’s good to do this before you begin showing them new cars, because you can figure out the customers’ buying motive, and will also be able to see what they feel is lacking in old car. Some dealerships like to hire experienced sales people, but that is rare. For most car dealers the most desired sales person is one that does not have car sales experience.

If you didn’t hit your numbers, determine what might need to be changed and change it. Then add the missed amount to the coming month’s goal. You don’t want to give up on the overall goal by just letting the past month drop. You want to take the sales dollars you didn’t get and add them to your goal for the coming month. Now plan for how you are going to achieve that – and get going.

No, those are always good deals. Ford and Mazda generally do them, and if you can take advantage of them, it’s probably better than any deal you’re going to get from any other brand or manufacturer. But my personal preference is that you love the car before you start looking at numbers. I really liked the Hyundai Sante Fe on paper, but after I drove it, I absolutely hated it. Same thing with the RX-8. Sexy as fuck, drove it, hated it. I had an opposite reaction to the Kia Forte – saw the numbers, thought it was meh, drove it – loved it.

Take your average car buyer: Let’s assume he or she is not a practiced negotiator. In fact, the prospect of a lively negotiation makes him cringe. The balance is already beginning to tip into the other party’s favor. The less tolerance you have for the emotional stress of negotiating, the quicker you’re likely to settle, says Michel Tuan Pham, professor of business at Columbia University. “It pushes you to seek closure to get rid of those bad feelings,” says Pham.

Yes and no. When you sell a Lamborghini, you could make about 1/4-1/6 of what a “top salesman” at other “mainstream” dealerships make in commission for the year; however it is rare, unless you live someplace like Miami (but even then the competition is steep), to sell many exotic cars in a year. It is also very boring to sell exotic cars because most of your time is spent prospecting, cold calling, and twiddling your thumbs. How boring is that?! Plus you can never accurately predict your income and would have to save your commission from a sale until you sell another… exotic cars is just a very stressful sales position unless you have another job or own the dealership itself. Much better to sell a luxury brand higher than Honda or Toyota (such as Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Subaru, Mercedes, Lexus, or Infiniti) because you’ll sell WAY more units, have consistency, and be busy all month long.

In February, DRIVE 2017: The Automotive Marketing Summit, brought together the automotive marketing industry’s most cutting-edge brands, agencies and ad-tech companies to talk best practices and the newest trends on the horizon.

That’s what keeps the car salesman going: the hope that next time, he or she is going to hit one out of the park. It’s a gambler’s mentality. But if you’re in commissioned sales, you have to have a bit of the gambler in you.

These dealerships have fewer competitors so there is not as much need to cut and slash prices. The customer base is also smaller, so they must rely on return customers. These dealerships do not have the luxury of consumer amnesia that dealerships located in urban areas enjoy.

The experience at a dealership becomes more of a hurdle because we have become less patient. We live in a world in which access to the world is right on our phones. One can watch just about anything on our big-screen TVs at any time. We are so tuned into technology that we buy almost everything we want without even leaving the house.

1) Each dealer will always have some “old salts” (experienced “lifers” in the car biz). Common sense might tell you to learn their ways, but my approach was to avoid them. Why? They’ve seen newbies come and go, and usually do not want to help them. They are there to take customers and put money in their till, not yours. You need to own your customers’ experience, not pass them off to someone else.

 Car dealers are in the business of selling cars to consumers, not financing cars that consumers buy.  So, this box advises you that after you sign the purchase contract and leave with the car, the dealership is going to find a finance company or bank to buy your contract.  This language gives a car dealer the opportunity to find someone to buy your purchase contract.  Most of the time this is not a problem.  However, if the car dealer cannot find someone to buy your purchase contract, it can cancel the purchase contract.  But, the car dealer must notify you within 10 days of the date on the purchase contract.  If it does not, then the purchase is final and cannot be cancelled.  Every purchase contract relating to a car purchase in California that I have reviewed has included this provision in it, and our firm has seen thousands of purchase contracts.

Social media feeds will allow a dealership to increase their current reach greatly. Simply start an account on Facebook and Twitter and ensure that your profile links to your website. Once followers start flowing in and likes are abundant, continual updates will provide further marketing. Promote new vehicles, special sales and engage the community. If one of these fans or followers shares the content you post about a new vehicle, it may just lead to a sale.

Our evaluation of the growth of these category-killer formats reveals that they are characterized by significant experimentation, not necessarily by great success and profits in their early development. However, once the format is perfected, these retailers rapidly replicate outlets across geographies. When observers look at the financial teething pains of Republic and argue that they are stumbling and will stop expanding, they ignore the lessons of the past.

27. If you can choose between a certified pre-owned (CPO) car and a non-CPO used car, go with the CPO. The selling price will likely be higher, but there are some significant benefits beyond just the extended warranty that comes with a CPO car. Carmakers review vehicle history reports for past problems and pay close attention to overall vehicle appearance.

33. If a vehicle history report shows the car’s been in an accident and you still want to buy the vehicle, get it inspected by an independent mechanic or body shop. For a small fee, a body shop will likely be able to tell you if it was a major accident (think frame damage) or a minor one.

Having a relationship with a local mechanic will always pay off because you can throw business to each other consistently. If you’re offering maintenance seminars, have the mechanic come in to teach some basics. They’ll get exposure too and you’ll get some added exposure at their shop.

You’ve figured everything out, you know vehicle and product costs, values of trades, what routes to take, etc. You know who will buy and who won’t buy. You start to cut corners anytime you can so you can take the easiest routes. You start to hang out within the clicks of salespeople whom are less successful.

Unlike the dealership consolidators that are trying to reduce costs through scale economies in administration, advertising and service, Republic’s stated strategy is to manage actively the vehicle life cycle while developing a proprietary channel brand. Another example of a company involved in external channel evolution is G.E. Capital Services, an extremely accomplished innovator. It has purchased Autobytel.com and is moving into used-car leasing.

The application of best practices across outlets. Given the wide variation and the resulting large differences in efficiency and effectiveness in operations among dealers, the application of best practices is a powerful cost-reduction lever.

For example, if you’ve written a blog post about “Things that every new car should have,” at the bottom of the post, you may want to have a link that says “Sign up for your free test drive today!” so that users are more enticed to follow through. For larger pieces of content such as ebooks and white papers, creating a call to action that leads to a landing page where the user is required to fill out a form before they download is an easy way to acquire contact information to add to a newsletter list.

As shoppers begin weighing practical considerations (like seating capacity and number of airbags, for instance), they start to develop a checklist of important features that best fit their needs. Stacy’s checklist included fitting three car seats and a sliding middle row.

9. The “Be Back Bus” doesn’t stop here. I think I can safely say that less than 2% of the customers that ask for your business card and tell that they will be back won’t. Yes, some do, but you will never make a good living waiting for “Be Backs”. Most customers that have decided that they are not buying from you or your dealership will tell you that they are going to be back and need a way to leave without making a commitment.

2. If you’re looking to get information on a car or talk about a deal, but you aren’t quite ready to buy, a weekday afternoon is a great time to go visit a dealership. You’ll get more personal attention than you would on a busy weekend.

7. Car sales compensation plans are designed for hard-chargers. If you’re not willing to work 50-60 hours a week, not aggressive enough to ask for the sale, and not polished enough to make people feel comfortable, you’re not going to make much money.

Act friendly and sociable during the interview. Smile and greet the person interviewing you. Maintain eye contact with the person interviewing you. Keep your body relaxed, with your arms in your lap or at your sides.[8]
