While Tesla is starting with expensive vehicles, they clearly have mainstream ambitions. They are investing to build a big car company. How hard is it to build and sell cars in the USA? Look at it this way: Tesla is the second oldest publicly traded auto company in the United States behind Ford. GM went bankrupt and went public four months after Tesla. Chrysler remains private following its own reorganization.
Used cars break, and require more followup. More time. More maintenance. New cars are pretty much worry free. So the question is what is your time worth? A single day off work will exceed the $100 a month you saved by getting a used car. Used cars are great because of the lower price, new cars are great because you’re getting value for the money. So either you’re paying to fix it, or you’re paying to drive it. My suggestion is to get the one with the best warranty (Mitsubishi has a phenomenal warranty program, and that was a major selling point for me – I tend to fall back on it often).
Dwell Time will remain a high-priority item. This is the time between a user clicking on your search result, landing on your page, and then returning to the search results page. Google watches this time closely on every click to determine the quality of the page. Short dwell times are not good.
Therefore, the dealership model feels incredibly outdated, and we have less patience for it. (That’s why we’ve wondered if Carmax isn’t on to something in the used car arena.) In fact, there is sure to be a growing demand for manufacturers to cut dealerships out of the deal all together. Instead, just setting up distribution centers where you pick up your car after purchasing (and financing) online.
Take advantage of that. It likely comes with a lot of content from corporate that you can use while you learn to personalize for your market. Chevrolet provides a tool called Digital Traffic Generator from Agency 720 that I use every day.

Everybody likes free stuff. And every dealer should like giveaways. Whether it’s a cash prize, free services (oil change, for instance) for a year, or a big discount on a new car purchase, the giveaway is a proven way to bring potential leads to a dealer lot.
And why is that? For one, who knows the real difference between any of the brands. The advertising and messaging are so alike and meaningless it’s no wonder car shoppers find little to choose from. For example, here are the main messages for each of the Buick models:
Each step of the customer buying process, like watching automotive videos or searching for images are vital “micro-moments” that marketers should take advantage of every step of the way. These moments push a customer to eventually choose a particular vehicle and then visit a dealership to check it out in person – the ultimate goal of the automotive marketer. Imagine what Joe Girard, America’s greatest car salesmen, could have done with this data!
Most people know the “Golden Rule,” but they don’t stop to think about it in daily life. You may get so focused on your job and making the sale, that you forget your customers are real people. They are making a significant investment, they may be stressed out, there could be a lot going on at home — you just don’t know what they’re up against in the current moment. If you treat others the way you would want to be treated in a dealership, you’ll find many more return customers and referrals coming your way.
Further production goals have been established in recent years, with the most significant policy document emerging in September 2013. That month, the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the National Development and Reform Commission released a plan providing a national subsidy of Rmb35,000-60,000 for customers who purchase NEVs between 2013 and 2015. In September 2014, the State Council also removed a 10% purchase tax on domestically-made NEVs, which was set to last until 2017; while this tax excluded imported vehicles, it allowed for cars made by foreign JVs in China to qualify. As part of these aggressive promotion plans, policymakers have called sales to total 2m vehicles by 2020, and accounting for more than 20% of total vehicle production and sales by 2025—meaning that NEV sales should average 7m annually over the next decade. In September 2017, central authorities publicly began mulling potential dates for when the country would phase out non-electric vehicles on China’s roads.
My dad always said, “Don’t answer a question with a question,” but in this case, there’s a pretty good measuring stick when it comes to advertising effectiveness. Are you increasing your market share? Assuming that your people, location, inventory, etc. aren’t changing, the best way to measure your advertising’s effectiveness is to measure your share of the pie versus your competitors’. Surely, customer traffic counts can be considered a measuring stick as well, but few dealers are great at logging customer traffic, and in today’s business climate, increasing the number of secondary finance leads at your dealership will do very little to increase your sales.
Unfortunately, the infographic doesn’t have a similar viral impact of say Intel’s Museum of Me which did some similar things; though, to be fair, the Intel idea requires significantly more budget to do. Intel created a personal video that brought people’s Facebook content into a museum like walkthrough. Perhaps a personal museum of BMW content shared by the person and their friends could showcase interaction with the brand in a more interesting way than an infographic.
The occupation’s markedly low happiness quotient may be related to a decades-old stereotype of car salesmen. According to Gallup and other polls, car salespeople continue to be ranked as some of the least honest, least ethical professionals in America. The negative effect of this stigma may be that awareness of the stereotype hurts both job performance and job satisfaction.
All of it ends in the ability of the Audi to drive 700 miles using one tank of gas. It’s a long three plus minutes to get to the final payoff with lots of beauty shots of the Audi driving the open road. Unlike a lot of fuel saving vehicle ads there is no information about how many MPGs the car produces or what benefits diesel may have over other fuel economical cars, just that it’s better than driving with an odd over-sharing limo driver.
There are really only two ways to sell cars and you can profit either way, but only one is for a long standing career, with a steadily increasing income and the ability to sleep well at night, with a clear conscience.
Support Overall Brand Initiatives: Consistency is the name of the game when it comes to automotive marketing. Auto shows, road shows and dealer events must fit in with your larger brand objectives. Each GPJ experience is designed to build on brand sales in your key markets.
Although consumers have a generally finite amount of research time, they won’t spend all of it with you. Make sure your inventory is active where the consumers are browsing to see them as many time as you can.
Going into the Black Panther marketing collaboration was a bit of a risk, given the ever-present danger of a heavily hyped movie falling flat. Instead, Lexus finds itself in the middle of a cultural phenomenon.
Mobile devices have not only become a key component of auto shoppers’ journeys but they also dominate digital interactions. Google studied in detail one consumer’s complete journey, from awareness to purchase, and found that 71% of digital interactions occurred on mobile. Additionally, 58% of auto shoppers agree that in the future their smartphone is likely to be the only device they use for vehicle research.
Sagging sales from Buick and Cadillac have hit GM, and you have to wonder if the way General Motors was founded – as an organically grown house of brands – holds the automaker into a continuous dance of trying to give meaning to their four brands and many models.
Many ignore the signals indicating the changes necessary to maintain the competitive advantage needed. Even worse, some are in a stagnant cycle of progress due to the solutions used. Six years of record new car sales has made it easy for some industry professionals to become very comfortable with their ways.
*Niche brand dealerships (say Jaguar, Porsche, Land Rover, Ferrari, etc.) may or not have a quota. It will depend on how many people they have, how big their market is, etc. They also often have lower commission rates and minimum monthly guarantees.
If you’ve ever purchased a car, the sales professional most likely employed the puppy dog close on you and probably never knew he was using this technique. But once you are aware of the technique, how to use it and when not to use it, you’ll see your sales numbers steadily improve.
