22. Don’t leave money on the table. If you don’t get the extra money out of your customer the F & I Manager will. If your car dealership has a good F & I Department they will get the money and commission that you left behind. I don’t know about you, but I like money in my pocket to much to give it up to the Finance Manager so don’t give up too easily.

Although consumers have a generally finite amount of research time, they won’t spend all of it with you. Make sure your inventory is active where the consumers are browsing to see them as many time as you can.

Strategy 4. Collect E-Mail Addresses. Get permission from your customers to use their E-mail address. Periodically send updates and notices to your client list. Thus, becoming a car salesman is not really a matter of qualifications, experience, or education. It is more involved with basic personality traits. This is not a profession for the mild or meek. It is not a career for the person who does not thrive within an atmosphere of intense competition. It is not the job you should seek if you dislike rejection, or fear heated diatribes by supervisors and managers when you have a slow week.

1. If you’re in no rush to buy a car, the end of a model year is a great time to get a deal. Determining when this is for a particular car can be difficult, but if a dealer has two years of a new vehicle on its lot (say, 2014s and 2015s), chances are the older ones are going to be priced to move. She didn’t check her insurance rate ahead of time, and when she called to add the car to her insurance policy a few days later, she was surprised how much more it was going to cost. (Teenage boy plus V6 equals higher insurance.) She wanted to return the car, but it was too late. As with “missing” car features, there is no clause in a sales contract that lets you return a car because insurance costs more than you expected.

We found that most dealerships that are experiencing lower ROI are also not using marketing automation. This suggests that marketing automation is an integral piece of the automotive marketing puzzle.

While some dealerships will hire applicants with no experience, most seek candidates with at least some sales background. It is therefore wise to start preparing in high school. Take courses in economics and business foundations to develop a basic understanding of finance. Increase customer satisfaction. Customer satisfaction and loyalty are rich veins of potential functional improvement. Manufacturers’ efforts are usually unsuccessful when they try to bribe the channel to improve customer service. Good performers in the channel end up getting paid for what they are already doing and the poor performers undertake short-lived, superficial steps to “manage the measurements.” Customer service in auto retailing is mostly about executing the basics well — fixing cars right the first time, keeping commitments, offering conveniences like pick-up and delivery where feasible. In these relationships with Silicon Valley, OEMs can retain a proprietary hold on interfaces as well as on connectivity and infotainment systems that distinguish them from competitors. Some early initiatives (such as BMW i Ventures, a venture capital fund based in Silicon Valley, and Toyota Connected, a partnership with Microsoft) offer glimpses of how the auto–tech ecosystem might work.

A better approach is to address systematically the whole realm of possibilities with an integrated view of benefits within and across specific functions. This is not easy. I’m considering buying a GL63 AMG (or maybe just a GL550), but it’s not exactly a car that dealers keep on their lots. Anyway, this dealership publically bragged about this “satisfaction guarenteed” policy, and I asked about it numerous times before I bought the car (verbal, and email) as I was uneasy about buying a used car due to these exact reasons. Each time (besides the first issue) I called or dropped the car off, everyone was cold towards me. The sales rep, the sales manager, service manager, even the receptionist.

Often, it’s difficult for sales reps to know where to start. If you ask them to call 50 people a day, they’re just going to pick up the phone book or go through the CRM randomly and call people. That’s not what we want to do. We want to go after people who are warm leads based on behavior.

Sponsoring a community event is one thing, but don’t forget that spring and summer are perfect for hosting events at your dealership, as well. Advertise a big weekend barbecue on your lot with free food and games for local families—no string attached. It’s a nice way to bring in new faces and create good will (that will eventually come back to you in the form of future sales).

Advancements in data insights and mobile technologies have also given dealerships new ways to target in-market auto and service shoppers by mobile IDs. Mobile targeting has generally taken the form of audience targeting, such as targeting based on device, apps, site user is visiting, and assumptive “look-alikes.  Real-time location targeting targets every device within a store’s proximity such as beaconing and geofencing. However, unlike traditional mobile marketing, which only targets the device, new technologies can target the actual consumer during the crucial 48-72 hour period when they’re making a buying decision.

Okay, so — remember how I said consumers in this day and age are extremely sophisticated? Well, along with being sophisticated, consumers are also smarter and FAR more tech-savvy than ever before, too!

Strategy 7. Pay-per-click advertising. Many business owners are finding classified advertising is not an effective use of their marketing dollars. Others are finding pay-per-click advertising is an easier and cheaper way to reach a larger market. Pay-per-click will insure you receive top visibility on websites driving more customers to your door. Advertisers bid on keywords and the more popular the keyword, the more expensive each click is. Prices vary between ten cents to many dollars depending on the popularity of the word. The most popular pay-per-click advertisers are Google, Business.com, and Yahoo.

Look at your marketing budget and the channels you’re using for advertising. For example, did you put a significant portion of your budget toward television commercials during the fall and winter? In spring and summer, your customers are less likely to be sitting inside watching TV, and more likely to be out and about. Consider taking some of your TV dollars and moving them into Facebook advertising or PPC ads.
