Consider the car’s interior, until recently a relatively stable component in terms of engineering and value to the automobile. Now, interior surfaces are potential real estate for ambitious enhancements of safety or entertainment. New technologies such as 3D laminated glass, haptic sensors, and augmented reality heads-up displays — which offer drivers alerts, safety aids, and warnings on invisible screens embedded in the windshield — have entered the vocabulary of traditional suppliers. Large navigation and entertainment display screens in the dashboard offer Web-based information and media as well as data arrays picked up from networked roads and other cars. The autonomous car will further up the ante, and soon. It will change the “living space” dimension of automotive interiors. The front seat may be reoriented to face the back seat, so passengers can converse as they would in their living rooms while the car cruises to a destination. Or seats could face a windshield that’s become a large movie screen. Even though I hate Mercedes, the E Class, CLS, S Class, and SL are absolutely gorgeous. Cadillac is not GM. I don’t know how they do it, but with roughly the same materials and build processes, they turn out a drastically superior product. I highly recommend them. Lotus is sex in automotive form. Tesla is the future of automobiles, and if you can get a Model S, sell your kidney. Audis vary from good (A series) to great (S series) to oh my god just hold me while I lay in the wet spot (R series). Acuras are angular Hondas and don’t belong in the conversation.

If you’re perceptive and have decent instincts, don’t be afraid to skip the qualification process. In our case, we parked a relatively expensive vehicle in front of a row of 135is, so any salesperson could safely assume we had the means and the interest. (In fact, the car you drive onto a lot probably says more about your means than any of the answers you provide to qualifying questions.)

They expect a specific level of service, so if that’s all you’re providing then they have nothing to encourage them to spend the time to review you.

Also, if another customer comes in and wants to offer less for the car than what it is priced at, the dealership will likely take it because they want to make the sale, thus the customer’s car is likely to bring in less than what they believe it will. Explaining this to your customers is important so they understand that you aren’t gypping them in price.[6]

Turn your focus to the surrounding car dealers in your area. What are they doing, both online and offline, that you’re not? What’s working for them and how can you do it better? Take time to research their entire marketing scheme, and how it all works together (or how it’s not working):

Recent research by Canvs found that more than 327,000 auto-related tweets are sent out daily, and 75% of these are directly related to owning or shopping. Using keyword targeting, these signals can be picked up and direct messages and advertising can be sent to those consumers who have displayed purchase intent.

Stunt marketing remains popular in the social age, the only difference is that these days the punters want to get involved in the action directly, which is what drove Auto Trader to hang a SEAT Mii 35 metres above the Thames and leave its fate in the fickle hands of Twitter.

The hands off approach — walk up to a potential customer, shake hands firmly and offer a quick greeting. Then, hand them business card and say “Hi my name is X, here are my contact details. My desk is over there, so take a look around and when you’ve found something you like or have questions come over and I can assist you. Also, if another salesperson approaches you, inform them I am assisting you.” (The problem with this approach is your customer won’t likely feel any attachment to you, and so they may move on to someone else or leave the dealership with no information gained.)

Just as specific groups of customers have their own product requirements, different consumer segments have their own requirements for the purchase and ownership experience. These requirements can be effectively targeted with channel, format and “soft offer” package variations such as service contracts, financing or sales incentives. Ultimately, the consumer-segment requirements will drive the service requirements and in turn help determine the best cost and operating structure for the specific distribution format and customer-value proposition.

For example: Don’t assume that a car has a certain feature that you want. I once was showing a midsize sedan to a guy who came into the dealership without his wife. We went on a lengthy test-drive, and then he bought the car. I didn’t know it, but he and his wife were going to use the car for long road trips, and because of his bum knee, his wife was going to do most of the driving.

Buying a vehicle is an emotional process, and pictures are the most direct connection to that emotion. Consumers want real pictures of the vehicle that they are actually considering, not stock photography. Use a proper staging area, quality equipment, and take lots and lots of shots.

Again, this is an opportunity to be the first dealership to establish trust with the car buyer by getting on their radar at step one of the buying process. Once trust is established, it becomes easy to nurture them right through to step five and completely eliminate your competitors.

I woke up this morning to a pitch on my twitter account.  Unlike most ‘hey can you post this on your blog,’ requests this one is pretty good.  There are some good examples of social media activations happening at the Auto Show including uses from Nissan, Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz. There’s even a little dig at Citroen who allows for email sharing only on a build application they have on the floor.

This is another unfamiliar skill that smart managers are trying to pick up. “There’s a lot of trial and error in the best companies right now,” notes MIT’s Ross. But there’s a catch, she adds. “Most companies aren’t designed for trial and error—they’re trying to avoid an error,” she says.

A few years ago the popular wisdom was to get your financing from a bank or a credit union, because the dealership’s financing was more expensive.  That’s no longer the case.  Most of the time, my Finance Department can beat your local bank or credit union, sometimes by a substantial margin.  However, I would still recommend going to your bank or credit union first, even if you don’t end up using their financing in the end.  Why?  Because, as a salesperson, I would rather someone else be the first to educate you on what you don’t qualify for.  Let them be “the Bad Guy.”  Let me be the hero who gets you a better rate.

The shop doing the inspection will tell you if there are any serious problems. If so, abandon the sale or negotiate lower.
