After looking over the vehicle, noting any damage, and asking any questions you may have about it, take their appraisal form into your sales managers office. It should take him only a minute or so to come up with his initial offer, but inform the customer it will take about 10 minutes and use that time to begin looking at new cars.

16. Know your inventory. Whether it be new or used car inventory you should have a good idea of what you have in stock so you can switch them to another car if the need arises. There can be any number of reasons, so knowing what to suggest or show them can put you way ahead of your competition. Get experience in customer service. Customer service experience is a big asset for being a car salesperson, as you will need to interact with customers all day long. Look for customer service positions in retail, such as at a department store or a clothing store. Having customer service experience will be an asset on your resume, as it shows potential employers that you have interacted with customers before.[2]

Reduce inventory costs. Dealers can cooperate among themselves and with the manufacturers to pool inventory in regional centers. Also, analytical methodologies, information- systems tools and best practices can be used to evaluate the dealer-level sales history to determine the best amount and mix of vehicles, including option packages, to hold in inventory. Finally, to improve future demand visibility and forecasting accuracy, dealers can use improved information systems and marketing techniques to track customer and sales-promotion information, lease-renewal marketing campaigns and historical data on sales-promotion effectiveness.

When first considering a new car, the majority of consumers don’t know where to start. They will usually enter a broad search query on their mobile device, like “best car” or “best truck.” The brands and models that pop up in this initial search will have a lasting influence on what a customer decides to do at the end of the car buying journey.

If a salesperson has a dry spell, some dealerships will let them draw against their commissions until they can pay it back. In car sales lingo, this is called being “in the bucket.” McDonald says, “Once you get in the bucket, it can be very hard to get out. You could owe $4,000 or $5,000 after two or three months. When that happens, the only thing you can do is quit.”

The customer service opportunities can’t be ignored: someone tweets you to see if you have a particular vehicle in stock and you share the information they’re looking for; you can tweet a customer when it’s time for a service or time to pick up their vehicle; and you could also use the platform to promote a sales event.

If you’re selling cards in the European automobile market, you are going against Volkswagen, which sports the continent’s two top-selling models with the Golf and the Polo. Volkswagen, also first in overall market share, owns nearly a quarter of the European market. (It is 14th in the US.)

2) If you find sales folks who are constantly negative, stay away from them. You’ll spot them right away… they usually stand off by themselves waiting for “ups” (folks coming on to the lot), smoking like chimneys and poppin’ TicTacs. They usually watch the clock like madmen, too. They float from lot to lot, burning through many contacts in the biz and finally ending up out of the biz altogether. They will leave a dealership at the drop-of-a-hat… always looking for “greener grass”.

43. In order to determine the value of a trade-in, you may be tempted to scan the Web to see what dealerships are asking for cars that are similar to yours. Resist the temptation. What a dealership asks for used cars and what it eventually gets are two different things.

If you buy a car that is financed through the dealership, the dealer CAN cancel the contract, but only if it notifies you within 10 days of the date on the purchase contract. This type of financing is sometimes called a “spot delivery.” It is based on the language of the purchase contract.  Look at your purchase contract.  That’s the long yellow document that says “RETAIL INSTALLMENT SALES CONTRACT” at the top.  Turn to the back of the purchase contract, and find the box that says “Seller’s Right to Cancel.” It is at the bottom of the second column.

Finally, I’m going to call 2018 the year of the pretender. The language from the vendor community is going to sound the same, but the results will be wildly different. Anyone can put a V12 sticker on a trunk lid, but when it comes time to open the hood, most will still have a wheezing, decrepit, four-cylinder still burning oil.

Once you’ve gotten used to sending email offers and posting on social media, use a tracking software to see where your leads and conversions are coming from. If a majority of your new customers found you through Facebook, you may want to step up social media efforts as opposed to spending your budget on under-performing platforms. By tracking engagement on all marketing platforms, you’ll have a better idea of where to invest your budget, leading to a greater ROI over time.

23. If you trade in your car every three years or so, it may make more sense for you to lease a car. You’ll likely have a lower cost over the three years and if you decide you’d like to keep the car longer than the term of your lease, you can buy it when the lease is done.

My dad always said, “Don’t answer a question with a question,” but in this case, there’s a pretty good measuring stick when it comes to advertising effectiveness. Are you increasing your market share? Assuming that your people, location, inventory, etc. aren’t changing, the best way to measure your advertising’s effectiveness is to measure your share of the pie versus your competitors’. Surely, customer traffic counts can be considered a measuring stick as well, but few dealers are great at logging customer traffic, and in today’s business climate, increasing the number of secondary finance leads at your dealership will do very little to increase your sales.

Also, they don’t invest in, or train their sales people. Even the vets. Product knowledge is only part of the job, but I NEVER see them going through the steps of asking questions. Again, poor training, lots of people on the sales floor = sheer numbers game (because of Murca loyalty and managers who can close the deal).

Sometimes a director changes his or her mind at the last minute, and was supposed to be a spaghetti dinner, for example, is now a breakfast spread. So the food stylist will squish down the meatballs and turn them into sausage patties. If you like the car, consider having it inspected by a mechanic before you buy it. If you don’t have a mechanic, Google and Yelp are good places to read local shops’ reviews. BMW dealerships are almost always full of douchebags. Same with Porsche. The only really approchable ones I’ve ever met in the luxury segment were Lotus and Aston Martin. Those guys will drink with the customer in the middle of the day.

Interacting with your community can be rewarding on so many levels. Whether you’re partnering up with a non-competing local business that serves a similar demographic, supporting a local charity, or advertising at a town holiday parade, your community offers limitless opportunities for you to expand awareness of your brand while doing something that makes you feel good.

To date, Republic has focused primarily on pursuing the benefits of consolidation typical in the first stage of retail channel evolution. But some of its actions suggest the potential for truly game-changing retail evolution. Don’t let your customer lie to you. Often times your customers will bring in a white lie about what they can afford, or what the dealership down the street is planning on offering them for their trade-in. Overcome these objections by being understanding but persistent. Explain to them that your appraisal of their car is accurate and a good deal. [5]

These moments push a customer to eventually choose a particular vehicle and then visit a dealership to check it out in person – the ultimate goal of the automotive marketer. Imagine what Joe Girard, America’s greatest car salesmen, could have done with this data!

Fact: Email is a great way of automobile marketing but engaging requires far more than a one-way message. What is your open rate? What is your click through rate, bounce rate? Sending the same message over and over to the same audience is not engaging. When you segment your list, request interaction and survey your list you will be far better equipped to convert that list into buyers. With today’s technology and the fact that 77% of consumers prefer permission based communication a more effective plan executes, tests, refines and re-executes.

6. Don’t bad mouth the other car dealer. They don’t want to hear how bad the car dealer is across town. Maybe they were there earlier today or yesterday and they didn’t buy a car from them. If the other dealer or car salesman was so great they wouldn’t be talking to you, they would have bought the car from the other dealer.

Practice interviewing to showcase your skills in building rapport with prospects, converting them to buyers and managing relationships. When asked questions about your strengths, emphasize your communication, interpersonal and customer service skills, as well as your willingness to work hard and not get discouraged when you don’t make a sale. Also, if you have experience or training on database software used in relationship management, practice talking about the software you have used and the value of relationship programs for car sellers.

Get experience in customer service. Customer service experience is a big asset for being a car salesperson, as you will need to interact with customers all day long. Look for customer service positions in retail, such as at a department store or a clothing store. Having customer service experience will be an asset on your resume, as it shows potential employers that you have interacted with customers before.[2]

Fill your CRM with copious notes and details about the lives of your customers and what tidbits they’ve given you over the years. For example, do you know a few of your customers take a road trip with their families every summer? Create and advertise one general offer for a certain percentage or dollar amount off a pre-road trip tune-up—but then, email those customers directly, tell them about the deal, and offer them an even better deal for being great customers. It shows you’re listening and you care about the details.

One of the most useful ways to use Facebook to connect with your customers is called “social care.” Social care is defined as customer service via social media. Customer service is essential to succeeding in any business, but it is paramount for an auto dealership, and those interactions are already moving online. In fact, a 2012 study by Nielsen found that 47 percent of social media users had engaged a company for social care and, what’s more, 30 percent of social media users prefer social care to traditional customer service over the phone, and for users aged 18-24 that number jumps to 37 percent!2

Often, it’s difficult for sales reps to know where to start. If you ask them to call 50 people a day, they’re just going to pick up the phone book or go through the CRM randomly and call people. That’s not what we want to do. We want to go after people who are warm leads based on behavior.

How can you move past customer baggage and preconceived notions? Think about the car salesman training tips you received when you started at your dealership. Did some of them make you uncomfortable? Chances are, your intuition was right on.

The sheer number of OEMs (and suppliers) in many segments has in the past prompted hasty partnerships and investments. Poor decisions have been made in an effort to avoid falling behind competitors rather than to maintain a logical, suitable path for growth. In many cases, an OEM would hear about a hot market and establish a plant or distribution arm there, only to find out that its models and brands were not a good fit for that region. Auto makers often expend too much energy — and money — on vehicle design and components of vehicles that have little impact on customers’ decisions. (That’s why when an auto maker exits a disappointing market, as GM is hoping to do through the proposed sale of its European operations to PSA, industry returns on capital tick up.)

For example, the sales of the Chevy Malibu, a mid-sized sedan, dropped a whopping 11.9% in the last year. The Chevrolet brand can’t provide the cover for the Malibu because the brand isn’t what carries the sale today. It’s the model. Rebranding automobiles means making everything simpler to understand.

In larger companies, training programs are more formal, but can still include mentorships. For instance, classroom training is typically available to teach individuals how to approach and handle customers. Individuals also develop techniques for negotiating and are given opportunities to understand the features of a vehicle. It’s also important for a car salesperson to learn how to effectively close a deal.

While this list of closing techniques is certainly not a complete list, it represents the techniques that have proven to be effective over time. As with learning the features and benefits of your product or service, learning these closing techniques takes time, practice, patience, and trust.

It varies. Specialty cars, like an Evo, are enthusiast ONLY cars. They usually know more than the sales people. In fact, I’ve seen on more than one occaision, a sales person get completely schooled by an enthusiast and blow the sale. With that being said, Evos dont’ get test drives. Sorry. It has a 1000km break-in period, and we’re not fucking with that engine. You know what you’re getting with that car, and it is… AWESOME.

Even when a consumer is at a dealership, they’re still researching on their mobile device, including checking out what the competitor has to offer. Savvy consumers want to feel secure that they’re getting the best deal possible.

Automotive marketers need to understand that there is rich data now available to them that they must leverage in order to stay competitive. They must also learn to use the technology and tools available, especially on mobile, to optimize their strategies. Aside from being in the sweetest spot they’ve ever been in, in terms of data and technology, automotive marketers should expect more intelligent developments within the advancements already made. In the future we expect automated-dynamic search and display campaigns powered by machine learning to become the norm, even for the smallest dealership.

What might such a game-changing revolution be in the automotive context? Marketing and selling extended-mobility service to consumers as opposed to pushing new cars? Life-cycle management of automobiles through multiple transactions? Selling cars and support services directly to consumers? We’re not sure, but evidence suggests that only those companies that are experimenting with such innovative concepts have a chance to be the future leaders of the industry.

To be sure, rates of return on capital have been a problem endemic to the auto industry for years, which is one reason for the many bankruptcies — or near liquidations — among OEMs and suppliers, particularly in the past decade or so. Surviving automotive companies have famously bent over backward to save pennies on every car or component they make. However, the situation is becoming more dire: The cost of capital is unlikely to come down from its already low inflation-adjusted levels, and new capital outlays are rising for advances in, among other areas, connected car and autonomous driving technology.

What’s more, by leveraging big data insights and partnering with resources like Google, dealers can evolve the existing noise of irrelevant online information into actionable consumer insights. With this knowledge, marketers can develop content and campaigns that increase inventory turnover rates and convert bottom-of-the-funnel buyers.

Car manufacturers have traditionally relied on flashy television advertisements to promote their brands. But with the ever-changing media landscape shifting into social media, this all looks set to change.

As a result of the high-cost, low-satisfaction proposition provided by the traditional dealer channel in general, many players have recently moved to capitalize on opportunities afforded by improving the channel-value equation. Entrepreneurs with access to public capital have strategic designs to modernize auto distribution. Six dealer groups in the United States went public in 1996-7. Collectively they soared past the $4 billion mark in revenue in 1997, up by more than 30 percent from 1996, with most of the growth coming from additional acquisitions of existing dealers.

Make a list of everyone you know and call them, email, or pop in on them. That will start the first week.

10. If you need an extended test-drive, just ask for it. One of my customers drove over a steep grade on her daily commute. It was 20 miles from the dealership, but because it was very important to her to test the four-cylinder crossover SUV’s ability to climb the hill, that’s where we went. A good car salesperson will understand your needs, and let you test the car accordingly.

Before food styling became its own career in the 1990s, it was up to network employees with home economics degrees (almost always women) to cook on-camera food. Then props departments became responsible. “But props guys can’t even make spaghetti,” Oliver says, laughing. Let them get out of the car by acknowledging the customer with a hello. When they have all exited the vehicle, use a nice greeting such as “Good Afternoon! Welcome to Shady Motors my name is Tom and you are?”

Lots of questions there Mary. Many business owners find they are their own sales force and struggle with it. Gaining a deeper understanding of sales might help you get over your fear. This week, #1 Cochran, Western Pennsylvania’s largest dealer chain, introduced an updated one-price, low-pressure strategy it says will change the way dealers sell cars, though Baierl Automotive Group in Wexford promised buyers the lowest price with a similar promotion in 2010: “No haggling. No fighting to get the best deal possible.”

Fact: Collecting your past customers’ data is crucial to the development of successful automobile marketing strategies. This is true because past customer data will allow you to build a profile of your ideal prospect.

Everybody likes free stuff. And every dealer should like giveaways. Whether it’s a cash prize, free services (oil change, for instance) for a year, or a big discount on a new car purchase, the giveaway is a proven way to bring potential leads to a dealer lot.

Many successful dealerships have these pages, as they’re a great way to tell consumers “Hey! We’re just like you!” A page stating “We’ve been family owned for 20+ years and customer service has always been our #1 priority!” lets consumers know that they’re going to be cared for.

Today, Marc Motors consistently ranks number one in Maine for retail Nissan sales against stores in much larger metro areas. Grosses are healthy and staff turnover is minimal, thanks in large part to the internal processes Marc has in place, but also because CBC was able to fine-tune Marc Motor’s message to present a tight, consistent presence that consumers identify with.

Video has passed the “up-and-coming” trend stage and it’s here to stay. Not only it’s one of the most effective tactics, the tactic bringing the highest ROI, but it’s also in high demand by consumers. Four times as many customers would rather watch a video about a product than read about it and 43% of people want to see more video content from marketers.

There is an alternative, of course: you can continue posting the same old awkward pictures of customers with salespeople for the rest of eternity. There’s no harm in it, really. Chrysler has tried to be something of parent brand with its “Imported from Detroit” advertising campaign, which has now morphed into “America’s Import.” The problem here is that neither theme is important to target audiences because they are all about Chrysler, not the target audience. In addition, they are too clever. They sound like marketing and, therefore, they are not believable. (Also: Who cares?)

I was on this site and read previous posts on National Auto Academy I took the course with National Auto Academy in NY with a trainer Chi Li and but since was working in OH I had to make the choice of moving to OH. I like the academy because they helped me find a job once I moved and it helps being part of the alumni services. Now, I would suggest this if you are trying to get into the industry but if you are still questioning the industry know that the hours are long but the earning potential is great ie the more cars you sell the more money you make. you write your own paycheck. @ Babalaas- I have to agree with your assertion that being a car salesman is not all about cheating a consumer. I think the ratio of good and bad car salespeople roaming dealer lots across the country is about 50/50.

There are so many different variations that range from no training to a week of training. Some are done with in house employees and some use outside trainers. Practically every dealership does it different, but it is tailored for those that never sold cars before.

This lack of a strategic perspective is holding back digital transformation at many organizations. They approach digital transformation as a cool, one-off project: we’re going to put this new mobile app in place and we’re done. But that’s not a systematic approach; it’s an island of innovation that doesn’t join up with the other islands of innovation. In the longer term, this kind of development creates more problems than it fixes.

Share platforms and manufacturing. When the goal is to improve efficiency in capital outlays, a good place to start is with platform (or chassis) and powertrain investments. Now that each auto maker is designing and building its own engines, transmissions, and related equipment, the amount of duplication within the industry is extraordinary. This is especially wasteful because consumers rarely buy cars for the platform — instead, they focus on such attributes as styling, quality, and reliability. Many OEMs, of course, already “repurpose” platforms across brands and models. However, platform sharing among OEMs is rare. One of the few examples is Nissan’s deal with Daimler to jointly develop the MFA platform, which is used on Nissan’s Infiniti QX30 model and Mercedes’ CLA and GLA models. In the U.S., GM and Ford are jointly designing a new 10-speed transmission (their second generation of transmission collaboration). Social advertising is one of the biggest automotive marketing trends of 2017. Today, effective use of Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and other popular platforms goes way beyond posting photos of new vehicles on the lot or sharing the experiences of happy customers.

Automobile ads are commonly associated with gleaming cars cruising winding roads in catchy TV spots. But a digitally savvy generation of customers, the emergence of new customer touch points, and the need for car manufacturers to distinguish their vehicles in a traffic jam of similar products has given rise to the adoption of new channels and strategies.

4. If you’ve already picked out a car from a dealership’s online inventory and worked out a price, do as much of the deal paperwork you can get over the phone. In many cases, you can be in and out of a dealership in less than an hour if you started the deal-making process online and over the phone. Why sit around in a showroom if you can avoid it?

Fact: Today’s buyers want to know everything there is to know about a product before buying. The more information you can share with them about your product the better. This helps position you as the expert your clients will come to again and again.

When it comes to subtlety, Billy Fuccillo is not your man. But he doesn’t need to be. Already famous for his commercials, which everyone watches (if only to unravel the mystery of the blonde woman featured in most commercials), Fuccillo goes in for grand gestures and spontaneous give-aways. Among Fuccillo’s biggest marketing tactics is the ‘Cruise With Huge’ sales event – in which everyone who bought a car during the sales event is invited on a 5-day cruise – which Fuccillo buys out every year. This year, the event was so huge, there are two cruise trips. This dealership marketing strategy’s power lays in its multiple benefits. First, it incentivizes customers to buy or lease during the sales event. Second, it mitigates the cost of the car, because you get a free 5-day cruise thrown in. And third, the cruise serves as a really nice ‘thank you’ to Fuccillo’s customers. You really can’t beat marketing that stretches the whole way through the buying process.

Fact: Bounce rates prove otherwise. Sending traffic to the home page of your website is ineffective not only because it is not a great user experience but because you are simply unable to measure which marketing channels and ads are converting. Landing pages with relevant content are essential for highly converting websites.

The report also mentions that Toyota is no newbie to being on top of these ratings. This gives us some perspective into the fact that delivering excellent customer experience isn’t a question of a single incident, neither is it the task of a single customer satisfaction team. 6. When you’re trying to negotiate a lower sales price, give the dealership a reason to discount the price. If you’ll use the service department, say so. If you’ll refer friends, be sure to say that, too. If you’re likely to give a perfect survey or buy a future car from them, share that with the dealership, too.

Believe me when I tell you, a seasoned Sales Manager will recognize your in this stage well before you do. A good Sales Manager will attempt to help you and get you out of your funk. (If you’re worth saving.) You just have to be smart enough to recognize they’re trying to help you.

We’ve stood on a soapbox before about social media in relation to car dealers, and we also believe that online marketing is often missed out on in car dealer circles, but don’t get the wrong idea. We’re not telling car dealer owners that they shouldn’t be using traditional marketing as well, just that they need to broaden their marketing scopes, or fall behind other dealers who are willing to take the risk and learn about this new online strategy that’s exploding into marketing.

Cost and customer-service improvements are necessary but not sufficient to transform auto retailing channels. Realizing the full potential of these programs is not possible without a reasonable view of the different customer segments that should be targeted; the appropriate mix and level of marketing and distribution functions needed for each segment, and the best portfolio of distribution formats and channels to reach the targets.

Those who do well in sales usually have the potential of moving up into sales management. But not all sales professionals are interested in management, and many who earn success at one dealership are recruited away to another dealership. Both advancement and landing a new job with a new employer both should mean an increase in compensation but also may yield an increase in some other factors.

Research by Unified shows that auto ads have 2 times higher click-through rates than the average Facebook ad.

“That’s a huge, huge difference,” says Pfaff President and CEO Christopher Pfaff, adding that the retailer has reduced its dependence on newspaper ads by nearly 30% in recent months. “There’s a lot of clutter out there. Consumers are bombarded [by direct mail advertisements]. I know I am.”

When a buyer is ready, they place a refundable deposit online. If they want to drive a car, they can arrange a test drive after they’ve placed a deposit. Essentially, Tesla is selling cars the same way Apple sells the iPhone.

According to the NADA, the average used car gross profit as of May 2013 was about $2400. However, this figure likely includes profits that salespeople never see…in addition to pack, most dealers charge ‘management fees’ and ‘inspection fees’ to their own inventory. That way they reduce commissions for salespeople and management even further.
