In fact, first-stage channel evolution activities are rampant in automobile retailing in the United States and Europe, and second-stage changes have begun to emerge for used cars. We expect that participants who fall behind in this evolutionary process will suffer severely, particularly as more and more of the value creation and differentiation in the industry occurs downstream. The future winners in the automobile industry likely will be the ones that drive third-stage evolution.
If you have the choice of a certified pre-owned car (CPO) or a non-CPO used car, go with the CPO. The selling price will likely be higher, but there are some significant advantages in having a CPO vehicle.

48. Make sure to keep the release of liability form you get from the dealership finance department. The car you trade in may stay attached to your name until the dealership sells it to somebody else. If the traded in vehicle gets a parking ticket, there is a good chance that ticket will be sent to you, as the last registered owner. The release of liability form will come in handy when explaining to the parking authorities that you’re not responsible and won’t be paying the ticket.
Often, they cannot even sell the car used due to the way the previous owner has kept it, and if the expenses are too high to recondition the car, they will instead send it to a wholesale auction. Usually once a month, auction houses have high end auctions where bidders can buy nice cars at exorbitantly low prices, albeit, their cost of repair or to bring back up to snuff can dig into the time needed to go from auction house to sales floor. This means that a used exotic car dealer must take responsibility and repair/recondition the car, and then try to make a profit off of it’s market value. This can end up being a hit/miss for the dealer.

Say a lady comes in with a 2006 Endeavor, and it is getting it’s 90k service. She’s due for a new car. Service tech talks to her, asks if she has time to chat with someone, and if yes, pings me. That means that she’s a referral, and no one gets skipped for “ups” in the front, it’s an appointment. If I sell her the new car, my service rep gets my $100 bird dog fee, in cash (publicly if possible). Even if it’s a mini-deal, I pay up. So if I only made $100, I pay the $100 bird dog and write it off as good karma. This means the next time my service rep sees something, shes going to send them to me knowing I’m good for it, and I’m honest, and fuck those other sales guys, I am the only one she goes to. I even get the techs in on it. It’s all about networking, even within your own dealership. It’s a treasure trove of good marketing.

While some dealerships will hire applicants with no experience, most seek candidates with at least some sales background. It is therefore wise to start preparing in high school. Take courses in economics and business foundations to develop a basic understanding of finance. Get a part-time job that involves customer sales and/or service to hone communication skills and get comfortable with meeting new people in a professional environment.

I don’t know about playing them against each other, but if there are two, tell them you’re shopping against one another up front. Just say “X offered me this on this vehicle, can you match it?” See, at Mitsu, I could go into dealer inventory, see what the OTHER dealerships had, and compare. If you wanted that specific color / package combo, and HADN’T contacted the other store, I’d try and work a dealer trade with them and make the deal at mine. If it was not the exact same match, I’d work within reason. So yeah, it doesn’t hurt to be up front. Once you announce your intentions, it sets the tone for the negotiations, and then in control.

37. Knowing how long a used car has been on the lot can help you get a better price. Here’s how to find that information. Dealerships run vehicle history reports from Carfax or AutoCheck when cars come in as trades. Ask to see the car’s report, and make a mental note of when the report was printed. If the date is recent, then the car is likely new to the lot and there’s not much bargaining opportunity. But if the report is more than 60 days old, that’s a good indication the dealership is willing to move on the price.
