Dealerships get a kickback from banks for charging you more for financing than you actually have to pay. Suppose the bank approves you at 2.9% but the dealership tells you you were approved at 4.9%. They now get a cut of that 2%. If you are financing get a quote from your banks and credit unions (any you could possibly use). Most post their best rates online. That way if you are approved at 3.9% at your bank. The dealership gets you approved at 2.9%, tries to charge you 4.9%, you get them to bump down to 3.9% to match your bank, now the dealership is happy and you are happy. There is also a chance they will lower the sale price another hundred or so dollars to convince you to finance with them.
Stage One: This is marked by major improvements in value delivered, mostly reductions in cost. Usually the cost reductions stem from consolidation and rationalization in the channel as better concepts or bigger players drive out marginal or small players. Creating purchase and ownership experiences to meet the needs of specific consumers has two other significant implications. First is the need for parallel formats and channels in a given region, each with its own pricing and bundle of service offerings. Parallel sales channels can range from the traditional dealer to the Internet or to direct sales. Parallel channels and formats raise the possibility of channel confiict and the need for expanded skills to manage and reduce it.
Plus, we were getting so good that if there was another brand of car on one of our sister lots (it’s a big auto group, and we were allowed to cross-sell), we could go over to THEIR dealership, sell THEIR car, and keep the commission. By the time he learned this, the car already had a few thousand miles on it, and he would have taken a sizable loss on trading it in.
Customers looking for a trade-in often times will value their car through Kelly Blue Book, but that value is only accurate if they can sell their car at full Kelly Blue Book retail. Every month a car loses 2% of its value, and then you have to attach all the expenses to it that make it ready to sell like tires, brakes, the noise in the back, that light that won’t turn on, the safety check, and reconditioning. Also, if another customer comes in and wants to offer less for the car than what it is priced at, the dealership will likely take it because they want to make the sale, thus the customer’s car is likely to bring in less than what they believe it will. Explaining this to your customers is important so they understand that you aren’t gypping them in price.
Thus, becoming a car salesman is not really a matter of qualifications, experience, or education. It is more involved with basic personality traits. This is not a profession for the mild or meek. It is not a career for the person who does not thrive within an atmosphere of intense competition. It is not the job you should seek if you dislike rejection, or fear heated diatribes by supervisors and managers when you have a slow week.
1. If you’re in no rush to buy a car, the end of a model year is a great time to get a deal. Determining when this is for a particular car can be difficult, but if a dealer has two years of a new vehicle on its lot (say, 2014s and 2015s), chances are the older ones are going to be priced to move. The last week of the year is another good time to buy. You’ll find lots of specials and manufacturer incentives at both times of year.
I worked with a mom who leased a V6 sedan that she was going to share with her teenage son. She didn’t check her insurance rate ahead of time, and when she called to add the car to her insurance policy a few days later, she was surprised how much more it was going to cost. (Teenage boy plus V6 equals higher insurance.) She wanted to return the car, but it was too late. As with “missing” car features, there is no clause in a sales contract that lets you return a car because insurance costs more than you expected.

Overall, becoming a car salesman is a great way to earn a living and to do something you can enjoy rather than dread like other jobs. Just like any job or career there will be some aspects that you won’t like, but that is part of every job no matter what you do. However if your irregular paycheck was always more than a steady paycheck which would you prefer. While some dealerships will hire applicants with no experience, most seek candidates with at least some sales background. It is therefore wise to start preparing in high school. Take courses in economics and business foundations to develop a basic understanding of finance. Get a part-time job that involves customer sales and/or service to hone communication skills and get comfortable with meeting new people in a professional environment.
I’m finishing my 2nd week at my 1st job on a car lot right now. I’ve learned that you can’t be someone that gets discouraged easily, people will lie and they don’t really like you. Other salespeople especially as a “Green” Don’t like you. This is a job you have to be motivated and driven to succeed in. I welcome the challenge.
If you get frustrated easily when work is not steady, make sure that you go into auto sales with a full understanding that there will be hours when no customers walk through your dealership’s doors. For some dealerships, these hours can be very long and plentiful so either seek employment with a dealership known for heavy traffic or commit yourself to using any downtime to improve the effectiveness of your “up time.”
Create a company profile for your dealership and optimise the listing with services and detailed descriptions, and keep it up-to-date with promotions. Actively using the listing in a professional environment is a great opportunity to generate promotion for vehicle leasing and other business services.
