Just started at a local Toyota dealership (I’ll be one week in on Thursday). What can I do to start building a client base and get my name out there besides Facebook. Seeing that I just started my business cards will not be in for a few weeks. Besides writing my name and cell phone number on the back of my sales managers cards and using Facebook, could you please help advise me with additional ways to build a client base?
34. Before you buy, get a good idea of what maintenance will be required and how much it will cost. If you buy a car that is nearing 75,000 miles, for example, look in the service manual for the recommended service at that mileage. Then go to the service department and ask how much that will cost. Don’t forget to check on tire costs.
There are really only two ways to sell cars and you can profit either way, but only one is for a long standing career, with a steadily increasing income and the ability to sleep well at night, with a clear conscience.
Want to make sure those eager buyers with fresh tax returns come to your dealership? One of the more popular dealership marketing strategies is offering to double someone’s tax return for a down payment—up to a certain point, of course. So, if someone walks in with $2,500 for a down payment, you’d throw in another $2,500, so they have a total down payment of $5,000. Again, the exact terms are up to you and what your dealership can swing financially.
Last week, the Temkin group released the reports of the “Sixth Annual Customer Experience Ratings” which evaluated 294 companies across 20 industries. The report revealed that Toyota delivered the best customer experience in auto dealers, with a rating of 66%. This report was based on a survey of 10,000 customers in the US. Mercedes Benz came second in the survey with a rating of 65% .
*Niche brand dealerships (say Jaguar, Porsche, Land Rover, Ferrari, etc.) may or may not have a quota. It will depend on how many people they have, how big their market is, etc. They also often have lower commission rates and minimum monthly guarantees.

Also, look for the conglomeration of rural and exurban dealerships to gain steam, as those are the dealerships that will serve the future of retail. Don’t be surprised if these conglomerates start doing away with commission-based compensation. On the marketing front, machine learning will continue to get smarter.
Seem urgent. This is a great way to complete a sale, because if the customer believes if they leave the dealership empty handed they’ll miss their chance at a great deal, they’ll be more open to buying a car that day or in the near future.
This is purely based on the dealer. Some have flat-rate commissions of $50 – $150, and others pay on a percentage sold over invoice. Used cars are where you can make more money, but that is slowly changing.
Not all states require automobile salesmen to be licensed, so you should check the requirements in the state they wish to work in. For example, automobile salespeople in California are required to pay a fee and submit an application to the Department of Motor Vehicles. Salespeople in Colorado must pass an exam and remit a bond, in addition to completing an application and paying a fee.
Pass the digital transformation exam, and you probably have a bright future ahead. A recent SAP-Oxford Economics study of 3,100 organizations in a variety of industries across 17 countries found that the companies that have taken the lead in digital transformation earn higher profits and revenues and have more competitive differentiation than their peers. They also expect 23% more revenue growth from their digital initiatives over the next two years—an estimate 2.5 to 4 times larger than the average company’s.
The “Campaigns” function analyzes all of that diverse content to see what is working best, so you’ll know more than just which tools are bringing traffic, such as Facebook, email, etc. You will actually find out which campaigns are working best. You can find out if that “Trade-In” campaign worked across all channels, if the “Year-End Clearance” campaign is showing success or if the “Buy 3 Tires Get One Free” campaign is gaining momentum.

No, I was lucky, like I said. My manager was awesome, and he set the tone. Most dealerships are not like that. We were the highest performing Mitsubishi dealership in the region, and it was a seriously shitty lot.
At that moment the deal became what is known a “split deal,” which means that my friend and I would have to split the commission 50/50. Well, this young man was a tough negotiator, and it took us something like four hours total to close him. And we lost our butts on the deal. If you try to do this by committee or just have the person who’s “free” monitoring online inquiries, your service will be inconsistent. You need someone who’s prepared to respond to online questions and quote requests and who will manage your website to keep inventory updated.
