My dad always said, “Don’t answer a question with a question,” but in this case, there’s a pretty good measuring stick when it comes to advertising effectiveness. Are you increasing your market share? Assuming that your people, location, inventory, etc. aren’t changing, the best way to measure your advertising’s effectiveness is to measure your share of the pie versus your competitors’. Surely, customer traffic counts can be considered a measuring stick as well, but few dealers are great at logging customer traffic, and in today’s business climate, increasing the number of secondary finance leads at your dealership will do very little to increase your sales.
Seeing what happens when you don’t negotiate should also motivate you to lobby for your interests. “You see that people take advantage of you if you’re not negotiating. Once that happens and you recognize it, emotionally, you say that’s not going to happen again.”
For example, Home Depot is attempting to capture additional market segments with new channels and formats, such as its Expo design stores, home installation services and Internet sales. In the consumer durables categories, the “category killer” format typically captures 30 percent to 40 percent of the market, leaving most of the rest spread among two or three other formats.
For example, suppose you used to have stellar credit and you’re used to getting rates like 1.9%. But over the last few years you’ve hit some bumps in the road, had some medical expenses that weren’t paid, been 30 days late on your car payment a few times, rang up some credit card debt, etc., and as a result your credit score isn’t what it used to be. But you aren’t aware of this when you start car shopping, because like most people you don’t pay much attention to your credit. In those circumstances, I don’t want to be the guy who tells you the best rate you qualify for is 14.9%. When I tell people things like that, their first reaction is to hit the ceiling. They think I’m trying to jack them up. Then they go somewhere else, hoping to get some better news. After two or three other dealers have told them “Yessir, 14.9% is the best we can do,” they finally accept reality and buy a car. But I’ve lost a sale. So I’d rather your bank or credit union set your expectations before I see you.
There was an interesting revenue tactic last week by the Associated Press when technology company Samsung advertised on the AP’s twitter feed during CES. AdWeek immediately covered the story, since there is some discussion about AP blurring the line of between “editorial church and state.”
Fact: Bounce rates prove otherwise. Sending traffic to the home page of your website is ineffective not only because it is not a great user experience but because you are simply unable to measure which marketing channels and ads are converting. Landing pages with relevant content are essential for highly converting websites.

This creates a kind of inertia so that even the umbrella brands, as discussed earlier, provide no cover for the models beneath it. That’s why the sales of a Ford Focus drop while the Ford Fusion does not. The automakers have taught us to look at the individual models, not the brand. They’ve done that by simply promoting product features. No one has REALLY implemented a strategy for rebranding automobiles. They just play with worn out tactics.
Its F-Series trucks are the nation’s best sellers, with the Fusion, Escape and Explorer all in the top 15. It was also the only one of the big three not to take government money, and its success is built on one brand: Ford.
Dealerships need to start having intelligent conversations when it comes to creating and maintaining vendor relationships. If they do not take the time to do the research, they will be paying too much, no matter how it’s measured.
There’s a lot to it, but I had a bad experience with a new sales manager who threw me under the bus to please a customer who lied about their experience with me. I saw the lack of loyalty, and frankly, I hated Mercedes Benz shoppers – so pretencious and snobby – with terrible credit, no money down, and a HUGE sense of entitlement. I was at a crossroads to stay in the industry and lose my integrity, or move on. I chose the latter.
Bill Playford I will try to make an automotive prediction that doesn’t include blockchain. Oh, crap, I just said it.The 2018 forecast calls for more coalition between Tier One suppliers and OEMs to further consolidate efforts on the autonomous driving front.

3. Don’t be afraid to listen to dealership suggestions. I’m not talking about bait and switch, but salespeople offering really good alternatives. When I sold cars, it was common for people to come looking for a particular model because of its low sticker price, but then drive out with a nicer car at the same or a lower price, thanks to the special programs and incentives that they didn’t know existed.
Car salesmen, or automobile retail salespersons, assist customers in the evaluation and purchase of automobiles. They may watch and greet customers on a lot and show them available cars that match their desires. Car salesmen must know the ins and outs of their available vehicles in order to best answer any questions a customer may have. They may also need to explain the benefits of having certain features in a vehicle. Car salesmen often accompany customers on test drives of vehicles. Once a customer has made a decision, these professionals handle all of the paperwork and discuss the policies and procedures for the purchase. Most car salesmen work on some form of commission. The following chart provides an overview of the education, job outlook and average salary in this field.
The car-buying process is entirely different today from what it was ten or twenty years ago. Mobile devices, new content platforms, and advances in automotive technology have changed the way people look for and buy cars. Rather than visit a dealership like they used to, people are now turning to the internet for advice when buying a car.
However, don’t obsess over every bad review. You’ll never satisfy everyone, and the anonymous nature of making online comments leads some people to be unfair (services like Top Rated Local let you mitigate this to a certain extent).
On cars such as Ferrari’s and Lamborghini’s, the manufacturers suggested retail price can be much higher than a standard road car. The people who are in the market for these cars do not necessarily want to pay the dealership markup on such vehicles, which can sometimes be 10’s of thousands of dollars. Instead, they do their research diligently, and go in with a set price. Often, nowadays, exotic cars can be leased. This also means that the amount of commission to be made off the sale is much lower than that of an outright sale/finance, as the dealership has to incur costs later to bring the car back in and sell it used.
We then took a look at the ways in which dealerships follow up with their digital leads. We found that dealerships that have a specific salesperson or business development center (BDC) to handle digital leads had significantly higher ROI in 2016 compared to 2015.
How do you get people far away to care about your dealership? You bring your dealership to them. Thompsons’ enlightened dealership marketing uses technology to achieve what it would normally take about a hundred semis to do. Thompsons sends Google Cardboards to target audiences in large population centers far from their dealership. With the cardboards is an easily-scanned QR code that links right to a video that introduces the dealership, their culture, the showroom, and a few of the most popular featured cars. Prospects can experience the dealership from the comfort of their own home, and even if they aren’t looking for a car at that exact moment, it’s guaranteed to be memorable.
Also, a lot of really attractive women came through there – I did not pay attention to them. For some reason, the lack of attention drove them insane, so while I’m negotiating with their father or treating them professionally, they’re waiting for me to hit on them – which never happened. I got asked out quite a bit, and I’m not a supermodel by any stretch. It was a serious ego stroke.
Most dealerships make 1.5% over invoice in profit. That’s usually $1250 for a new car, of which the sales person gets 25%. On a used car though, if they make $3000, it makes a difference. Most used cars are priced to profit by $1000 to $3500, depending on the market.
