The shitty lot status helped quite a bit, because every dealership in the area expected us to suck. So they badmouthed us. With such high loyalty, it was a total turn off, and we got soooo many customers who came in said “I was just at… (insert dealership name) and I mentioned that I bought my last car from you guys, and they were such dicks about it! Be authentic. Don’t just put on a happy face to make a sale. Actually care about your customers’ needs and sympathize with them. Be patient and don’t force any decision on your customer.

Another way your dealership can be relatable is to make consumers feel as much like they’re in control as possible. You want to answer consumer questions or inquiries before they even think to ask them. On your social media pages, post pictures of your actual showroom so that consumers have an idea of what they’ll look like.

Internet technology enables more effective and efficient direct contact between manufacturers and their ultimate customers. You will often see advertised positions for car salesmen, which would seem to indicate that the auto business is booming. This is not necessarily the case. Car dealerships hire many salesmen because they often pay solely on commission. Sell cars, and you make money. Fail to reach a minimum sales quota, and you make nothing. Often, it’s difficult for sales reps to know where to start. If you ask them to call 50 people a day, they’re just going to pick up the phone book or go through the CRM randomly and call people. That’s not what we want to do. We want to go after people who are warm leads based on behavior.

Eye contact creates a connection, and when you’re purposely or subconsciously avoiding that contact, it creates a disconnect with customers. There’s a happy medium, though, because too much eye contact can seem too intense and condescending. Aim to make eye contact about 30-60% of the time during a conversation — more when listening, less when speaking.

Friend or salesperson?: Often people go to someone they know to buy their car because they think they will get “hooked up” with a sweet deal. In a Gallup poll measuring perceived honesty and ethics in professions, car salespeople were near the very bottom of the list — tied with telemarketers and members of Congress, and only above lobbyists.

Then develop a strategy to fill the information gaps and help to inject your dealership into their purchasing equation. If you can be of help you will establish a sense of goodwill and if they come to the conclusion they’re after a vehicle you sell, well you’ve staked a claim that they should buy from you.

The reality today is that a company needs both a strong IT department and strong digital capacities outside its IT department. If the relationship is good, the CIO and IT become valuable allies in helping businesspeople add digital capabilities without disrupting or duplicating existing IT infrastructure.

How often did you have to deal with customers such as myself, and did they usually leave with what they wanted? How often did they have to return their cars for something more economical? Car salesmen must be able to stand for long periods of time and walk through the car lot. Some salesmen may need to be able to work for long hours. The ability to withstand a variety of outdoor temperatures, such as intense summer heat or cold winters, is also helpful.

Republic Industries, for instance, expects sales to reach $1 billion on the World Wide Web by the year 2000. Estimates vary, but some studies have shown that with some cars, as many as 40 percent of customers gather information from the Internet. A smaller but growing percentage of customers demonstrate what is called shopping behavior, or soliciting price quotations and availability information prior to the actual purchase.

Just as you would quickly follow up with an in-person customer complaint or other feedback, you must also follow up with any online feedback. If a customer posts a comment on your Facebook or Twitter page, reply in a friendly and professional manner. Don’t ever start an argument with a customer on social media or it will come back to haunt you, and can even seriously damage your auto dealership reputation.

No one is impossible – you’ll just need a cosigner. Most first time car buyers need one – and in fact, you’ll always get a better deal that way. So if you’re unemployed and graduating college, it’s nice that you want a new car, but remember this is a long term commitment, so measure that against your desire for something cool and shiny. What are your expectations in the car? Are you planning on keeping it for a while? Do you have a girlfriend with plans to get married? Kids? Are you living at home?

An interesting study by ACA Research maps out the automotive customer journey and the timing for key events from initial research to final purchase.
